Background and History

Yu Xiaogang built his identity around martial soul theory, including the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul. His soul power is permanently unable to surpass level 29 because of his mutated martial soul, leading him to focus on theoretical research rather than personal cultivation. His reputation in Notting City had already deteriorated before Tang San became his disciple; noble families withdrew their children from his classes amid claims that his teachings could not produce strong Soul Masters. 17 21

At Notting Junior Soul Master Academy, he identifies Tang San as a possessor of Twin Martial Souls and accepts him as his disciple. Tang San treats the master-disciple bond as familial, declaring that “a master for one day is a father for life,” which deeply satisfies Yu Xiaogang. 15 16

Yu Xiaogang also attempts to recruit Su Yun after suspecting that he possesses Twin Martial Souls. Su Yun refuses and openly questions Yu Xiaogang’s ability to guide such a talent. In response, Yu Xiaogang publicly wagers his title of “Grandmaster” on a duel between Tang San and Su Yun one year later. 18 20

Tang San loses the duel after his Blue Silver Grass is suppressed by Su Yun’s martial soul, forcing Yu Xiaogang to forfeit the title. Rather than abandon his ambitions, Yu Xiaogang immediately reframes the setback as motivation for a future ten-year, life-or-death contest between the two boys. 47 48

Tang Hao later reveals that Su Yun possesses the Blue Silver Emperor and that Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass is an incomplete form of the same martial soul. Yu Xiaogang becomes focused on helping Tang San evolve it, believing that a fully awakened Blue Silver Emperor paired with the Clear Sky Hammer could restore his own standing through Tang San’s future achievements. 50

When Martial Soul Hall seeks Tang Hao and Tang San, Yu Xiaogang refuses to reveal their whereabouts. Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo capture and interrogate him, with Yue Guan severely injuring him and breaking his legs. 62 63

Unable to remain in Notting City, Yu Xiaogang goes to Shrek Academy to seek Flender’s aid. His disability and weak martial soul lead Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun to mock and attack him before Flender intervenes. Although Flender is resentful of Yu Xiaogang’s past actions, he allows him to stay. 75 77

After recognizing Dai Mubai as a Star Luo prince, Yu Xiaogang recruits him as a second disciple by offering a connection to Tang Hao and the prospect of aid in the imperial succession struggle. Dai Mubai accepts after initially attacking him. 87 90

Years later, Yu Xiaogang resumes responsibility for Tang San after Tang Hao returns the boy to his care. He supports Tang Hao’s plan to oppose Martial Soul Hall and proposes moving Shrek’s gifted students to the Heaven Dou Royal Academy for improved resources. 124 125

Yu Xiaogang later accompanies Shrek’s group to Heaven Dou Imperial City and seeks a position at Lanba Academy. His reputation is again challenged when a Martial Soul Hall agent publicizes allegations that he took Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun to Tian Shang Ren Jian. Liu Erlong ultimately accepts his explanation, reunites with him, and permits the Shrek group to join Lanba Academy, which is renamed Shrek Academy. 143 146
