Background / History

Recruiting Shen Feng

Flender first appears as a certified Martial Soul Hall patrol deacon conducting awakenings in Shuiyun Village. His main recruitment targets are children with innate soul power of level seven or higher. Shen Feng’s lightning-attribute blade and Innate Full Soul Power immediately attract his attention 2.

When Shen Feng declines his invitation, Flender releases his Soul Saint aura to demonstrate his qualifications, frightening the other children. Shen Rui and Ling Na intervene to protect their son. Flender retracts his martial soul and changes to negotiation, promising priority resources, individual instruction, and companionship with another Innate Full Soul Power student, Oscar 3.

He accepts the family’s three enrollment conditions: both parents may accompany Shen Feng, they may participate in his education with priority over soul ring decisions, and the family may withdraw if Shrek fails to support his growth. In return, Flender asks them not to challenge the academy’s teaching philosophy publicly, especially before students 4.

Early Cooperation and Academy Reform

Flender accompanies the family on Shen Feng’s first soul ring hunt. After confirming that the six-year-old has the physical constitution of a Soul Elder, he leaves the risk decision to the parents rather than pursuing an unprecedented thousand-year first ring for Shrek’s reputation. The group settles on an approximately 800-year ring 5.

His willingness to buy firearms for Shao Xin and Oscar’s protection improves Shen Feng’s opinion of him. Shen Feng instead offers to make guns for the academy without payment 6.

Shrek’s buildings initially remain dilapidated and underfunded. Shen Feng later proposes an admissions system in which unsuccessful applicants can ask a cultivation question for their non-refundable ten-Gold-Soul-Coin fee. Flender supports this legal alternative to the academy’s earlier scams and extortion. Over three years, the service attracts rogue soul masters and helps the surrounding village expand to at least twice its former size 9 13.

Separation from the Soul Hunting Guild

Flender initially refuses to let Shen Feng’s family and Oscar leave, fearing that their departure will undo Shrek’s recovery. They present the move as outside training rather than formal withdrawal. He eventually relents after Oscar expresses his determination, acknowledging that Shrek lacks the resources to nurture their potential fully 16 17.

The relationship continues through mutual assistance. Flender and Zhao Wuji help Shen Rui and Ling Na obtain their sixth soul rings; Shen Feng later provides techniques and other support in return 20 21.

Flender subsequently seeks help for Ma Hongjun’s flawed Phoenix martial soul. Shen Feng supplies a Millennium Cold Jade pendant to suppress the problem temporarily and helps arrange suitable soul ring hunting 20 21. Flender also permits Ma Hongjun to join the Soul Hunting Guild, recognizing that the boy can receive better training alongside Shen Feng and Oscar 36.

Titan Giant Ape Incident and Loss of His Arm

During a later Star Dou Forest expedition, Flender fights the Titan Giant Ape and protects his students, including Ning Rongrong. Tang San attacks him with Dragon Whisker Needles while trying to pursue Xiao Wu, leaving him severely injured 64 65 70.

Shen Feng extracts nine embedded needles and later performs surgery with Ye Lingling’s healing assistance. Flender survives, but his left arm is severed at the root 66 67.

Upon waking, Flender asks about Tang San and rejects the others’ demands for revenge, describing the boy’s actions as necessary rather than malicious. He later explains that Tang San is Tang Hao’s son and that the academy risks retaliation from a Title Douluo. He and Zhao Wuji arrange for Ning Rongrong to return home and seek help from the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 67 70.

Advanced Academy and Tournament Recruitment

More than a year later, Flender appears healthier and better dressed despite his missing arm. With Guild Master Shen’s support, Shrek has registered as an Advanced Soul Master Academy and gained tournament eligibility 89 90.

Flender abandons the old restrictive admissions rules. He describes the reformed Shrek as an academy for rogue soul masters that accepts students regardless of background, with many age-appropriate Soul Hunting Guild members studying there 90.

He visits Shen Feng to recruit him for the Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament. Learning that Shen Feng has reached level 58 convinces him that championship victory is within reach. He serves as team leader, but rejects simply filling roster vacancies with ordinary eligible Shrek students because none have reached level 30 90 91.

Appearance

  • Lasting injury: His left arm is missing from the shoulder after the Star Dou Forest incident 67.
  • Later clothing: Wears less shabby clothes with luxurious gold-thread embroidery on the lapels, reflecting his improved circumstances 89.
  • Martial soul manifestation: Displays a golden owl phantom when releasing his power; his giant owl form is pale gold 3 64.

Personality

Flender is ambitious about Shrek’s reputation and intensely interested in exceptional talent. His recruitment of Shen Feng ranges from intimidation to generous concessions. He also admits privately that some academy histories and rules were fabricated to deter talented students and make them easier to manage 3 4 6.

His concern with money does not always outweigh personal loyalty. He readily offers to buy defensive firearms for vulnerable food-type soul masters and is willing to spend money addressing Ma Hongjun’s condition. He also refuses to gamble Shen Feng’s safety merely for the prestige of a thousand-year first soul ring 5 6 20.

He enjoys lecturing and exchanges exaggerated, mock-combative banter with Zhao Wuji. Beneath that bluster, he becomes emotional when Oscar calls him a father figure and promises that Shrek will remain Oscar’s home 12 17.

Flender can accommodate choices he dislikes: he respects Dai Mubai’s reasoned soul ring selection and lets Ma Hongjun leave for better training. His later rejection of Shrek’s old rules marks a shift from preserving an exclusive “monster academy” toward supporting disadvantaged rogue soul masters 23 36 90.
