| Title Douluo, level 91 | 33 | Retrospective account of his early Title Douluo period. After refusing Martial Soul Hall’s recruitment, he survived pursuit by level 95 Chrysanthemum Douluo through delaying poison attacks and Prince Xue Xing’s rescue. |
| Title Douluo, level 93; Poison Dragon martial soul | 42 | Consumed the Earth Dragon Golden Melon on the fifth day after Shen Feng entered the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. His martial soul evolved into a true Poison Dragon, his self-poisoning was completely cleared, and his level rose to 93. The evolution also granted earth-attribute control 46. |
Background / History
The Dugu family’s inherited Jade Phosphorous Serpent martial soul poisoned its own users throughout their lives. Dugu Bo’s evolution into the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor increased his potential enough to reach Title Douluo, but intensified the venom until it also endangered his family. His wife died after giving birth to their son; his daughter-in-law died after giving birth to Dugu Yan. His son later endured three days and nights of a venom outbreak before dying in front of Dugu Bo and the nine-year-old Dugu Yan 35 53.
After Dugu Bo first reached Title Douluo, Martial Soul Hall attempted to recruit him. His refusal led to Chrysanthemum Douluo hunting him down. Outmatched at level 91 against a level 95 opponent, he used poison to delay his pursuer until Prince Xue Xing saved him. This left him grateful to Xue Xing and sympathetic toward spirit masters who survived conflict with Martial Soul Hall 33.
More than a decade before his treatment by Shen Feng, Dugu Bo gathered his internal venom into a Poison Core, but this only contained the problem rather than curing it. Around ten years before their visit together, he discovered the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Tentative contact with its spring water and the Snowy Swan Kiss nearly killed him, despite his already being a Title Douluo 35 40.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and thin 50.
- Eyes: Emerald before treatment; later described as black after his martial soul’s evolution 34 42.
- Hair: Ink-green. A strand turned silver during his grief over Shen Feng’s apparent death 42.
- Facial hair: Has a beard, which he strokes while considering the danger posed by an unknown soul beast 64.
- Martial Soul Avatar: A giant dark-green or ink-green Poison Dragon 49 75.
Personality
Dugu Bo initially presents a stern, intimidating demeanor, but responds well to sincerity and respect for his boundaries. Shen Rui observes that he is harmless when given space and quiet. His professional pride does not prevent him from recognizing Shen Feng as an equal poison expert or learning unfamiliar chemistry from him 33 34.
He values loyalty and friendship, repaying Shen Feng’s help with protection and an extensive collection of medicinal treasures. His granddaughter is his greatest vulnerability: he worries about her survival, fiercely defends her worth, and sometimes intervenes unfairly on her behalf. Nevertheless, he recognizes that her rapid growth has made her arrogant and asks Shen Feng to teach her humility without injuring her 34 45 48 73.
His caution contrasts with his occasional opportunism. He retreats from threats beyond his confidence rather than investigating out of curiosity, yet attempts to seize a soul bone when stronger opponents are occupied. He also enjoys teasing Shen Feng, including an elaborate, non-toxic prank that changes the boy’s appearance 49 64 85.
Abilities & Skills
Poison Arts
- Large-scale lethality: Martial Soul Hall considers his poison a troublesome weapon of mass destruction 33.
- Poison formations: The barrier around his retreat deters ten-thousand-year soul beasts and is fatal to soul masters below level 70. His antidote pills provide one hour of immunity after taking effect 39.
- Soul-beast capture: Knocks out a 30,000-year Moonlight Savage Bear with poison and establishes barriers to exclude unwanted beasts or protect ring absorption 46.
- Medical application: Uses green poisonous mist to numb Flender’s senses before surgery 66.
- Research limitation: Cannot formulate an antidote to Shen Feng’s Paraquat, prompting him to acknowledge the boy’s expertise 33.
Chemistry and Antivenom Research
- Studies Shen Feng’s formulas, laboratory instruments, and modern chemistry through six months of collaboration 34.
- Helps synthesize No. 6 Jade Phosphorous Serpent Antivenom, an initial treatment that does not remove the underlying martial soul defect 34.
- After curing himself, personally prepares an Antitoxin Serum from his blood to clear Dugu Yan’s hidden danger 40 42.
- Brews an immortal-herb catalyst from fifteen precious medicinal materials to improve their soul-beast lure 46.
Earth Manipulation
- Gains the earth attribute through the Earth Dragon Golden Melon, alongside his existing poison attribute 46.
- Creates earthen walls, giant palms, and mud hands to trap, strike, or transport soul beasts 46 47.
- Uses earth and poison together to immobilize the White Jade Bees for relocation 61.
- Constructs a five-by-five-meter earthen room that the group converts into a sterile operating room 66.
- Initially lacks proficiency with earth control and compensates by coordinating it with poisonous mist 46.
Seventh Soul Skill: Poison Dragon Avatar
- Transforms into a giant Poison Dragon capable of flight, unlike his former serpent martial soul 49.
- Uses the transformation to fight the Thunderous Hell-Prison Vine and evade attacks from Chrysanthemum and Ghost Douluo 75 85.
- His healthier body and stronger martial soul allow him to function as a power-attack combatant in some situations rather than only a fragile control-type spirit master 56.
Eighth Soul Skill: Poison Dragon Breath
- Releases ink-green energy from the dragon’s mouth, mixed with numerous sharp earth spears 75.
- Employs sustained breath attacks while circling Thunder God Mountain 75.
- Cannot decisively damage the Thunderous Hell-Prison Vine alone in its lightning-rich environment; the group must expose its roots with explosives 75 76.
- Uses the skill against Chrysanthemum and Ghost Douluo, though Chrysanthemum Douluo blocks it with a flower-shaped shield 85.
Perception, Suppression, and Defense
- Detects a dangerous soul beast before the rest of the group notices any disturbance, prompting an immediate evacuation 63.
- Can apply soul-power pressure sufficient to restrain a seven-ring Soul Saint, although Shen Feng breaks free of that pressure 48.
- Creates soul-power barriers to protect others from the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well’s disruptive energy 39.
- Uses an ink-green shield to withstand lightning during his battle with the Thunderous Hell-Prison Vine 75.
- Takes the brunt of the vine’s self-destruction while shielding the group, sustaining a significant injury 76.
- At level 93 after evolution, is stated to be capable of putting up a fight against a level 95 Title Douluo; this does not make him a match for Chrysanthemum and Ghost Douluo together 56 85.
Equipment / Items

- Zhao Wuji — Respects his courage in escaping Martial Soul Hall’s siege, reflecting Dugu Bo’s own hostility toward the organization 33.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Paraquat and the Search for a Cure
Shen Feng deliberately distributes Paraquat in Heaven Dou City to attract Dugu Bo and secure access to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. The plan succeeds: Dugu Bo travels to Soul Hunting Town and waits half a month to meet its creator. Their private poison discussion develops into six months of laboratory research 22 33 34.
After the initial antivenom proves insufficient as a complete cure, Shen Feng presents three approaches 34 35.
| Treatment | Proposed Effect | Dugu Bo’s Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Detoxification Method | Dissolve the venom with restraining herbs, sacrificing some soul power because poison and cultivation are fused. | Potentially suitable for Yan, but unacceptable for him because he could fall below Title Douluo 35. |
| Transfer Method | Move the poison into a storage host, such as a soul bone. | Treats symptoms rather than the cause; resembles his earlier Poison Core solution 35. |
| Reinforcement Method | Strengthen his body and evolve his martial soul into a true Poison Dragon. | Difficult at his age and with all nine rings already acquired, but offers a route beyond his existing limits 35. |
Sunset Forest and the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well
Dugu Bo takes Shen Feng to Heaven Dou City and then brings him and Dugu Yan to his retreat. He rejects attempts by the royal factions to recruit him, preferring seclusion and treatment. At the well, Shen Feng identifies the Earth Dragon Golden Melon as the best herb for Dugu Bo 36 38 40.
Dugu Bo lets Shen Feng undergo his own dangerous herb treatment first so that he can supervise. When the boy disappears beneath the spring, Dugu Bo and Yan mourn him and burn incense for three days. Dugu Bo subsequently consumes the melon, reaches level 93, and cures Yan with serum. Brief disturbances in the well revive his hope, but its renewed silence leaves him in tears 40 41 42.
Shen Feng returns after ten months. Dugu Bo celebrates the reunion with a banquet and a generous medicinal gift; Shen Feng reciprocates with the Dragon Reverse Scales 44 45.
Soul-Ring Hunts and Zhu Zhuqing’s Apprenticeship
- Captures suitable soul beasts in the Sunset Forest and safeguards Shen Feng’s battle against the Thunder Armor Scorpion 46 47.
- Uses Shen Feng’s duel with Dugu Yan to expose her overconfidence, then retaliates for her humiliating defeat with a pigment-deposition prank 48 49.
- Accompanies Shen Feng back to Soul Hunting City and declares that he will protect the guild from hostile infiltrators 56 57.
- Supports the Star Dou Forest expedition, helps relocate the White Jade Bees, and assists with Flender’s surgery 60 61 66.
- Accepts Zhu Zhuqing as a disciple after she contains Soul King-level poison. He later recognizes that her spider lances also devour life force and leaves responsibility for her moral guidance to Shen Feng 73 74.
Thunder God Mountain
Dugu Bo holds off the Thunderous Hell-Prison Vine while Shen Feng’s group prepares an explosive attack on its roots. When the vine self-destructs, he shields the party and absorbs the initial impact, suffering a significant injury. Their combined defenses and support abilities keep everyone alive 75 76.
Beast Tide and Soul-Bone Dispute
Dugu Bo joins Sword, Chrysanthemum, and Ghost Douluo against the Titan Giant Ape and Sky Azure Bull Python. Even their prolonged combined assault fails to defeat the two hundred-thousand-year soul beasts 81 82 86.
When six soul bones become the focus of the confrontation, Dugu Bo attempts to seize one while the stronger combatants are occupied. Chrysanthemum and Ghost Douluo attack him, forcing him into his Poison Dragon Avatar. Sword Douluo intervenes, and the factions move toward negotiation rather than continued combat 85.
Tournament Preparations
Dugu Bo later arrives at Soul Hunting New City with Dugu Yan, offering her as a member of Shen Feng’s tournament team after the Imperial Douluo Team’s disbandment 91.
