Background / History

Luthor led LexCorp from Metropolis and secretly spent four billion dollars establishing a global surveillance network dedicated to Superman. The system used seventy communication satellites alongside facial-recognition, voice-recognition, trajectory-prediction, and data-synthesis software to track and assess Superman’s movements. 111

He regarded Superman not as humanity’s savior but as an alien force whose protection would make humans dependent and suppress their capacity to survive danger independently. Convinced that humanity must save itself, Luthor dedicated himself to finding a way to destroy Superman. 111 131

Before his public conflict with Superman, Luthor was implicated in human experimentation using Superman’s genes. He had Lexi eliminate researchers who intended to expose the Central City laboratory operation, while LexCorp’s connections prevented a direct case against him. 59 112 Superman later uncovered nine experimental bases in Metropolis, each associated with hundreds of deaths. 117

During General Zod’s approach to Earth, Luthor set aside his immediate hostility toward Superman and became a leading advocate for preparing against a Kryptonian invasion. As United Nations Space Strategy Commander, he deduced that the Kryptonians intended to terraform Earth and joined Alex in an attempt to board the Kryptonian mothership and rescue Superman. 132 134

On the mothership, Luthor presented himself as an Earth traitor, offering Zod military intelligence and assistance locating the Central Codex in exchange for the survival of one-tenth of humanity. His proposal gained Zod’s cooperation, though Alex later disrupted the plan. 136 137 Luthor nevertheless protected Alex during their escape, ejecting a section of corridor to send Faora into space. 143

During the later Apokoliptian threat, Luthor personally destroyed a Parademon base with Kryptonian-powered armor and deployed hundreds of intelligent armors against other bases. After learning that Doomsday could endanger Earth, he ordered renewed use of Superman’s genes to create a countermeasure. 277

Luthor was eventually convicted on more than seventy anti-human and anti-social charges, including illegal gene experiments, cloning, and experiments involving Superman’s genes that resulted in Doomsday’s creation.
