Background
Ichigo attends Karakura First High School and has perceived ghosts since childhood. When he encounters Wu Biao appearing from thin air, his curiosity is heightened by the strange spiritual ripple surrounding the incident. 2
He initially dismisses Rukia's explanation of Shinigami, Hollows, and souls as nonsense. That skepticism ends when Hollows attack his home and target him for his exceptional spiritual power. While trying to protect his family, he receives Rukia's power and becomes a Substitute Shinigami. 7
His first major personal battle is against Grand Fisher, the Hollow connected to Masaki's death. Ichigo insists on confronting the enemy himself as a matter of dignity, but Grand Fisher's imitation of Masaki leaves him vulnerable. Wu Biao ultimately intervenes, kills the Hollow, and restores Masaki's remaining soul fragment into a spirit body. 18 19 20
Appearance
Ichigo is an orange-haired youth whose appearance changes substantially with his releases and Hollow powers. 163 311
- Bankai attire — Wears a black robe lined in red; Tensa Zangetsu's chain wraps around his exposed right arm. 282
- Hollow Mask — His advanced mask is thick and heavy, marked by two red lines. 165
- Partial Hollowfication — The mask disappears, while a horn grows from his head and a black stripe runs from his forehead down his neck. 165
- Later horned form — During his clash with Shanks, he manifests an erect horn, raised hair, and a dark-red stripe across the left side of his face. 291
Personality
Ichigo is blunt, skeptical, and difficult to provoke over matters that do not concern him. He initially refuses Uryu Ishida's challenge, only accepting when Uryu attacks the legitimacy of his Substitute Shinigami status. 7 24
He places immense importance on protecting his family and companions. His anger toward Grand Fisher stems from Masaki's death, while his later resolve centers on becoming strong enough to defend others even when Wu Biao is absent. 18 20 311
Rather than rejecting the dangerous powers within him, Ichigo comes to regard Old Man Zangetsu and White Ichigo as partners. This acceptance defines his approach to Hollowfication and his refusal to abandon Zangetsu for a more orthodox weapon. 124 158
Abilities & Skills
Spiritual Perception and Substitute Shinigami Powers
Ichigo can naturally see ghosts and possesses spiritual power high enough to draw Hollow attacks. After receiving Rukia's power, he can leave his body and fight as a Substitute Shinigami. 2 7 17
- Uses Kon's Soul Candy to separate his soul from his body. 17
- Possesses spiritual pressure that reaches captain-class intensity upon activating Bankai. 89
- Adapts quickly to unfamiliar supernatural opponents and abilities. 124 311
Zangetsu and Tensa Zangetsu
Ichigo wields Zangetsu, whose existence combines his Shinigami, Hollow, and Quincy-derived powers. His Bankai is Tensa Zangetsu. 89 158
- Fires Getsuga Tensho, including purple-black and black-red variants empowered by his Hollow side. 90 99 124
- Uses Black Flow Fang Thrust, concentrating black-and-red spiritual pressure around Tensa Zangetsu before releasing it at the moment of impact. 314
- Rejects Oetsu Nimaiya's offer to forge a replacement weapon, considering Zangetsu an extension of his soul. 158
- Old Man Zangetsu is the source of his Quincy power, while White Ichigo is identified as the main body of his Zanpakuto. 158
Hollowfication
Ichigo can use a Hollow Mask and eventually partial Hollowfication, though earlier stages risked loss of control. 90 101 124
- His third-stage mask has nine red stripes and lets him contend with released Arrancar such as Grimmjow. 114
- The fourth mask stage is unstable; a mistake can trigger an irrational berserk state. 124
- His fifth-stage mask is the stated limit of his mask-based Hollowfication. 165
- Partial Hollowfication gives Hollow power priority, produces a horn, and allows him to use Hollow techniques such as Cero Oscuras. 165 306
Speed and Combat Adaptability
Ichigo adjusts his fighting style around an opponent's limitations rather than confronting their strengths directly. Against Rusba's gravity ability, he circles outside its effective area and enters only to attack, eventually creating enough afterimages to prevent his opponent from locking onto him. 311
- Uses high-speed movement capable of producing numerous indistinguishable afterimages. 311
- Fought Shanks as an even match, with their early clash destroying Marineford Harbor and Marine Headquarters. 291 292
- Was able to battle Ulquiorra at a level beyond the point where Oetsu Nimaiya could intervene. 165
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Zangetsu — Ichigo's unique Zanpakuto and the vessel of his mixed powers. 158
- Tensa Zangetsu — Zangetsu's Bankai form. 89
- Kon / Soul Candy — Uses the Mod Soul's pill to leave his physical body and assume his Shinigami form. 17 24
Relationships
- Wu Biao — Friend and surrogate elder brother. Wu Biao's support helps shape Ichigo's acceptance of his own powers, and Ichigo resolves to protect the space behind Wu Biao in battle. 20 98 124 311
- Kuchiki Rukia — The Shinigami who transfers her power to Ichigo. They repeatedly support one another, including during Rukia's rescue and the Zanpakuto rebellion. 7 33 123
- Kurosaki Isshin — Ichigo's father. Ichigo is shocked to learn that Isshin was formerly the 10th Division captain and later searches for him after his disappearance. 156 299 301
- Kurosaki Masaki — Ichigo's mother. Her death drives his conflict with Grand Fisher; Wu Biao later restores her spirit body. 18 20
- Uryu Ishida — Initially a Quincy rival who challenges Ichigo over the role of Soul Reapers. Their relationship develops into friendship through repeated shared conflicts. 24 26 92
- Hirako Shinji — Visored who tests Ichigo's Hollowfication and agrees to teach him control after Ichigo retains his sanity during the transformation. 89 101
- Old Man Zangetsu and White Ichigo — Manifestations within Ichigo's inner world. Though often antagonistic, he recognizes both as partners and components of his own soul. 124 158
Story Role / Major Arcs
Soul Society Rescue
After Byakuya defeats him and Rukia is sentenced to execution, Ichigo undergoes Urahara's 72-hour Pit of Despair trial to become a true Soul Reaper. He enters Soul Society with his allies, defeats Jidanbo, and continues the rescue despite the Gotei 13's opposition. 29 31 33
At Sokyoku Hill, Ichigo fights beside Wu Biao against the gathered Gotei 13. By this stage, he has mastered Bankai, though he struggles to find an opponent amid Wu Biao's confrontation with Yamamoto. 53
Arrancar and Visored Conflict
The appearance of Hirako Shinji exposes Ichigo's unstable Hollow power. After initially refusing the Visored, he later seeks their aid and learns to Hollowfy without surrendering consciousness. 89 91 101
Ichigo accepts his Hollow power during his battle with Grimmjow, then advances through controlled mask stages. He later confronts Ulquiorra, ultimately using partial Hollowfication to suppress Ulquiorra's Segunda Etapa. 98 114 165
Zanpakuto Rebellion
During Muramasa's Zanpakuto rebellion, Ichigo aids Rukia and Soul Society while defending his belief that Zanpakuto are partners rather than tools. Muramasa's attempt to manipulate Zangetsu fails because neither Old Man Zangetsu nor White Ichigo harbors resentment toward Ichigo. 122 124
Later Interworld Conflicts
Following the Aizen conflict, Ichigo's three powers become increasingly integrated. He arrives in time to confront Ulquiorra during the later Arrancar battle and demonstrates power significant enough to surprise Oetsu Nimaiya. 163 165
During the Marineford conflict, Ichigo duels Shanks to a standstill until Wu Biao calls him back. He subsequently goes on a pirate voyage before returning home to learn that Isshin has disappeared. 291 292 299
While searching for Isshin in another world, Ichigo battles gravity users Bu Yuanluo and Rusba. The crisis reinforces his determination to become strong enough to protect his family without depending on Wu Biao's return. 306 311
