Time passed in a flash, and evening arrived.
Of the forty-three youths and children who took part in the Jueming Cliff trial, only twenty-one ultimately reached the summit.
Of the remaining twenty-two, some gave up midway out of fear, while others hung exhausted from the cliff face, unable to continue. Luo Can used Soul Power to send them all back to the base of the cliff, eliminating them from the trial.
Standing atop the cliff, Luo Can looked at the twenty-one exhausted, pale little faces and nodded.
"Congratulations. You have passed the trial and earned the status of Inner Pavilion Disciples for three months. These are your rewards."
He took out twenty-one copies of the Embryonic Breathing Meditation Method and handed one to each of them.
"Cultivate diligently. Remember, you only have three months. Within those three months, your Soul Power must rise by one major realm, or you will be demoted to Outer Pavilion Disciples."
"Yes, Pavilion Master!"
The children accepted the meditation methods and clutched them tightly to their chests, their eyes brimming with excitement.
As for the other twenty-two, Luo Can did not reprimand them. He sent the children back to Baican Village, arranged for them to join the Outer Pavilion, and then left.
After returning to Fate Defying Valley, Luo Can briefly told Qian Renxue what had happened that day.
Qian Renxue sat on a rock by the lake. After hearing Luo Can out, a hint of amusement flashed through her eyes. "Fate Defying Pavilion... that really is an arrogant name."
"But I like it."
Luo Can sat down beside her and suddenly asked,
"Then would you be interested in becoming the Vice Pavilion Master of Fate Defying Pavilion?"
Qian Renxue froze and turned to look at him.
"Vice Pavilion Master?"
"Mm." Luo Can nodded, looking at her seriously.
She was powerful enough, knowledgeable enough, and had once been the "Crown Prince" of the Heaven Dou Empire. She lacked neither experience in handling affairs nor managing people. Fate Defying Pavilion had only just been established, and it needed talent like her.
Besides, with a Super Douluo standing guard—and one with a Six-Winged Dark Angel martial spirit—Fate Defying Pavilion would gain another layer of protection.
Qian Renxue fell silent for a moment before suddenly smiling. "Oh? I am Spirit Hall's 'Young Master.' Aren't you afraid that one day, I'll betray you and send all of Fate Defying Pavilion's intelligence to that woman?"
Luo Can smiled as well.
He shook his head, his tone unwavering. "No. And I believe you won't do that."
Qian Renxue stared at him for a long while.
Moonlight spilled over the two of them, and faint ripples spread across the lake.
"...All right."
Qian Renxue finally spoke. "Rather than walk the same path as that idiotic original body, I would rather walk my own path."
She stood and looked up at the night sky. "I want to defy fate and change my destiny too!"
A smile flashed through Luo Can's eyes. "Then, Vice Pavilion Master Qian, I look forward to working with you."
"Likewise, Pavilion Master Luo."
The two exchanged smiles.
That night, Luo Can was in an excellent mood and personally cooked a lavish "feast."
Qian Renxue ate with great satisfaction, leaving not even a drop of soup behind.
The saying that the way to a woman's heart was through her stomach seemed to apply even to a dark angel.
The night passed without incident.
The next morning, just as the sun rose, Luo Can finished a night of Fishing.
[Ding! This Fishing session has ended. Overall rating: Good. Reward: 3,000 Points.]
Today's haul was rather ordinary. The best item was a Level 9 Fixed Soul Guidance Shell. Its power was enough to threaten a Title Douluo, but it was a single-use consumable. Once used, it was gone.
Other than that, he caught a batch of pills that accelerated Soul Power cultivation. Their quality was decent, but they were hardly treasures.
Luo Can could not help muttering, "Did catching Qian Renxue use up all my luck?"
He shook his head, put away his fishing rod, and began preparing the day's food.
After breakfast, Luo Can went to the study.
He picked up pen and paper and began designing Fate Defying Pavilion's Contribution Point System.
Rule after rule appeared on the paper.
Gathering medicinal herbs: one Contribution Point for ordinary herbs. One additional Contribution Point for every extra ten years of age. Rare spirit herbs and top-grade medicinal plants were worth at least one hundred Contribution Points, likewise increasing with age.
Assisting in obtaining Spirit Rings: two Contribution Points for a ten-year Spirit Ring; twenty Contribution Points and up for a hundred-year Spirit Ring; two hundred Contribution Points and up for a thousand-year Spirit Ring; two thousand Contribution Points and up for a Ten Thousand Year Spirit Ring.
Intelligence gathering: rewards would be determined by the influence of the target faction. Small sects and small clans were worth anywhere from ten to one hundred Contribution Points. The Seven Great Sects, the Two Great Empires, and Spirit Hall were worth at least one thousand Contribution Points, while vital intelligence could exceed ten thousand.
Killing Fallen Spirit Masters: one hundred Contribution Points for one ring. Two hundred for two rings. Four hundred for three rings, and so on. Every additional ring doubled the Contribution Points.
All told, Luo Can wrote several hundred rules. They covered everything from the simplest gathering and errand-running tasks, to mid-level guarding and Spirit Beast hunting, all the way to high-level intelligence, assassination, and strategic missions. The scope was vast, and the difficulty tiers were clearly defined.
Then came the "Contribution Point Exchange List."
Soul Power Pills, Body Refining Pills, and all manner of auxiliary pills... all clearly priced.
Soul Tools, from Level 1 to Level 5, with prices soaring according to grade.
All kinds of rare metals, medicinal herbs, Spirit Beast materials... everything was available.
Finally came the centerpiece: the "Spirit Bone Exchange Section."
Thousand-year Spirit Bones, starting at two hundred Contribution Points.
Ten Thousand Year Spirit Bones, starting at five thousand Contribution Points. (Currently, only Spirit Bones between ten thousand and fifty thousand years could be exchanged.)
As for Spirit Bones of even greater age, Luo Can did not write them down for now. It was not that he was reluctant to part with them—he was simply afraid of frightening people.
"Whew..."
By the time he wrote the final word, the sky outside had already grown dark.
Luo Can put down his pen, rubbed his wrist, and looked at the thick stack of papers on the desk before letting out a long breath.
"Finally... finished."
He picked up the proposal and left the study.
Qian Renxue was sitting by the lake, admiring the scenery.
"Vice Pavilion Master Qian." Luo Can walked over and handed her the proposal. "Take a look. What do you think of this Contribution Point System I designed?"
Qian Renxue accepted the thick stack of papers and raised a brow.
"So much?"
"Mm, I tried to account for everything."
Qian Renxue said nothing more and began reading through it page by page.
She read quickly, but the proposal was simply too detailed. By the time she finished it all, it was already late at night.
After reading the final page, Qian Renxue looked up at Luo Can, a complicated glint flashing through her eyes.
"Pavilion Master Luo," she said slowly, "are you trying to replace Spirit Hall?"
Luo Can nodded and admitted it openly.
"Yeah."
Qian Renxue: "..."
She was silent for quite a while before letting out a soft sigh. "Fine. This proposal is already very complete. As long as you have sufficient resources to support it, more than ninety percent of the continent's lower-tier Spirit Masters will flock to you."
She paused, and her voice turned more solemn.
"But you should also understand how many factions' interests this system will affect once it is made public. The Seven Great Sects, the Two Great Empires, especially Spirit Hall—they will never sit back and watch a new faction that unites all lower-tier Spirit Masters rise to power. Are you prepared to contend with them?"
Luo Can thought for a moment and said, "Fate Defying Pavilion is still too weak. I will not expose it to the attention of those behemoths too early. In my plan, during the early stages, Fate Defying Pavilion will merely be a rising sect that prospers by selling medicinal herbs."
Qian Renxue nodded and handed the proposal back.
"As long as you have a plan, it will be fine. This proposal can be implemented."
It was midnight again.
Luo Can arrived at the lakeside on schedule and took out his fishing rod.
The first five casts were unremarkable. After a full hour and a half, he had only caught a few bottles of pills and several chunks of metal, all of average quality.
"My luck today... is really awful." He muttered as he cast the sixth line.
This time, the wait was especially long.
Ten minutes, twenty minutes, half an hour...
A full forty minutes passed before the fishing line finally began to move!
"It's here!"
Luo Can's eyes narrowed. He exerted force with both arms and hauled up the rod with all his strength. "Get up here!"
Splash—!!!
A massive black shadow burst from the water and crashed heavily onto the grass by the lake!
It was a Spirit Beast.
Its entire body was black as ink, gleaming with a cold luster beneath the moonlight. It stood nearly two zhang tall, its body covered in granite-like muscles. Its limbs were as thick as pillars, but the most eye-catching feature was its pair of bright yellow eyes, which looked like two small lanterns in the night.
It shook its massive head, then lowered it and looked at Luo Can before it.
[Spirit Beast: Titan Giant Ape (Juvenile)] [Bloodline: Top-tier] [Age: 500 years] [Description: A hegemon-class Spirit Beast possessing incomparable strength and defense. Though only five hundred years old, its true combat power is enough to rival an ordinary Ten Thousand Year Spirit Beast.]
Luo Can looked at the little giant ape before him and was momentarily speechless.
A five-hundred-year Titan Giant Ape had taken him a full forty minutes.
"This feels like a bit of a loss."
He muttered to himself.
The Titan Giant Ape blinked its bright yellow eyes. The next moment, it actually revealed an almost "ingratiating" expression.
It cautiously shuffled half a step forward, brought its huge head close to Luo Can, and gently nudged him.
It did not have the slightest trace of the majesty expected from a hegemon-class Spirit Beast.
Luo Can paused, then reached out and touched its coarse fur.
It felt as hard as iron and as cold as stone. This big fellow was clearly unsuitable for keeping as a pet.
"Fine."
Luo Can shook his head, an idea forming in his mind.
"Perfect. Lingling needs a new sparring partner. That hundred-year Ghost Tiger is no longer enough for her. This five-hundred-year Titan Giant Ape is just right."
He patted the Titan Giant Ape's head.
"From now on, you'll be responsible for practicing punches with my little disciple. If you perform well, there will be rewards. If you don't perform well..."
He pointed at Fate-Defying Lake in the distance. "I'll throw you back in there."
The Titan Giant Ape: "Roar?"
Its bright yellow eyes were filled with confusion.
Luo Can ignored it and cast his fishing line into the water again.
