Background / History
Yu Xiaogang was born into the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan as the sect master’s son. Rather than awakening the clan’s famed dragon martial soul, he awakened the pig-like mutated martial soul Luo Sanpao with only half a level of Innate Soul Power. Though supplied with extensive clan resources, he remained stuck at level 29 and could not become a Soul Elder. 13 185
He later accessed confidential Martial Soul Hall records through Bibi Dong, with whom he had an affair. The information included details concerning Qian Renxue’s Angel Martial Soul and Angel God Armor. 185 Subsequent accounts describe him as leaving Martial Soul Hall after Qian Xunji discovered the relationship, then becoming involved with his cousin before fleeing their exposed wedding. 198
For roughly twenty years, Yu Xiaogang lived at Nuoding Academy while maintaining the public image of an aloof “Grandmaster.” 198 His theoretical knowledge included genuine familiarity with rare martial souls and spirit beasts, but his reputation rested heavily on the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul. 4 136
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is described as a short-haired, flat-topped man whose poor condition often makes him appear haggard or corpse-like. 4 13 136
- Short hair and a flat-topped hairstyle. 4 136
- Initially maintains a cold, stoic façade to project the image of an expert. 4
- After Chen Yumo’s martial soul evolution disproves his judgment, his hair rapidly turns white and he appears to age dramatically. 28
- Frequently appears disheveled during periods of stress or obsession. 26 86
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is intensely insecure about his mutated martial soul, low Innate Soul Power, and inability to advance beyond level 29. He reacts especially badly when Chen Yumo’s externalized Ice Silkworm martial soul—initially considered similarly weak—shows greater potential than Luo Sanpao. 13 14
He is fiercely attached to his identity as a theoretical master. When Chen Yumo evolves his martial soul after Yu Xiaogang publicly declared such growth impossible, Yu Xiaogang suffers repeated breakdowns rather than reconsidering his conclusions. 26 28 His confidence can rapidly return when he sees an opportunity to restore his fame, as shown by his eagerness to publicly defend the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul. 138
Despite his selfishness and pride, he shows real concern for Tang San. He endured a Mandala Snake bite while protecting Tang San during the latter’s first spirit hunt, even injuring himself to remain conscious. 10 Over time, however, his care becomes inseparable from his desire to use Tang San’s talent to vindicate himself and destroy Chen Yumo. 87 246
Abilities & Skills
Luo Sanpao
Yu Xiaogang’s mutated externalized beast martial soul is a pig-like creature. It possesses two Spirit Rings, but Yu Xiaogang remains permanently stalled at level 29. 13 29
- Its power is increased by feeding it white radishes, which intensify the volume and odor of its flatulence-based spirit skills. 13
- Chen Yumo assesses Luo Sanpao as having passed its optimal growth stage, making evolution through his own nourishment method effectively impossible. 29
- Yu Xiaogang’s inability to evolve Luo Sanpao becomes a central source of his resentment toward Chen Yumo. 26 28
First Spirit Skill — Hongtian Liedi Luo Sanpao
Yu Xiaogang enlarges Luo Sanpao and releases a powerful, foul-smelling gas attack from its rear. 18
- The attack generates enough force to blast targets into walls. 18
- Its poisonous gas can incapacitate or severely harm weak opponents. 19
- During an uncontrolled academy incident, the attack killed two students and resulted in Yu Xiaogang’s arrest by Spirit Hall. 19
Martial Soul Theory
Yu Xiaogang authored the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul and built his public identity around its conclusions. 137 138
- He correctly inferred that Tang San likely possessed Twin Martial Souls after seeing Blue Silver Grass paired with Innate Full Soul Power. 4
- He could identify the Black Emperor as a Dark Demon Evil God Tiger from its traits, drawing on records he had read at Martial Soul Hall. 136
- His theories rely on rigid, absolute conclusions, including claims that Innate Soul Power directly determines martial soul quality and that certain martial souls are inherently useless. 14 138
- Chen Yumo publicly refuted multiple competencies, criticizing Yu Xiaogang’s spirit-ring limits and compatibility rules as potentially dangerous when applied without regard for individual physique, mental strength, attributes, or bloodline. 139 141
Relationships
- Tang San — His disciple and greatest hope for proving his worth. Yu Xiaogang protects and mentors Tang San, then increasingly treats Tang San’s growth as the means to clear his own name and kill Chen Yumo. 10 87 246
- Chen Yumo — Bitter enemy. Yu Xiaogang publicly denounced Chen Yumo’s Ice Silkworm martial soul as useless, then became obsessed after Chen Yumo evolved it and dismantled his theories in public. 14 26 141
- Tang Hao — Tang San’s father. Tang Hao initially approves of Yu Xiaogang after witnessing his willingness to protect Tang San. 10
- Bibi Dong — Former lover who allowed him access to confidential Martial Soul Hall information. 185
- Qian Xunji — Bibi Dong’s father, who discovered Yu Xiaogang’s affair with her and expelled him from Martial Soul Hall. 198
- Flender — An associate at Shrek Academy. Yu Xiaogang later entrusts Tang San to Shrek, then angrily blames Flender when Tang San is severely injured. 87
- Yu Yuanzhen — His father and the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s sect master; Yu Xiaogang later cites Yu Yuanzhen’s death as another reason to hate Chen Yumo. 169 247
