Background / History

Zhao Yuanchong began as the Zhao Family's indulged Third Young Master. Though gifted with a Grade-A spiritual root, he neglected cultivation, preferred the company of women and drink, and regarded his attendants as objects for amusement. Zhao Minglai assigned Wang Yuan—Li Tui's identity at the time—as his reading companion specifically because Wang Yuan was steady enough to endure him 5 6.

He quickly tested Li Tui's obedience through deliberate humiliation, including ordering him to clean a chamber pot. Li Tui's total lack of visible resentment unsettled Yuanchong more than open defiance would have 7. Yuanchong also repeatedly targeted his collateral-branch cousin Zhao Hao, insulting Zhao Hao's mother and spiritual-root aptitude before trying to have Li Tui arrange an “accident” for him 8 12.

His hostility toward Zhao Hao stemmed partly from the instinctive conflict between their Star Fates: Zhao Hao's Seven Killings fate suppressed Yuanchong's Greedy Wolf fate 13. He later grew equally resentful of Zhao Wen when the Zhao Family publicly supplied the supposedly cursed collateral descendant with valuable cultivation resources 28.

The Year-end Tournament forced Yuanchong to take cultivation seriously. Determined to win, he accepted dangerous medicinal support to open his Qihai and trained until his hands were torn open against an ironwood stake 31 32. In his match against Zhao Wen, Yuanchong abandoned his initial disdain, fought cautiously against Zhao Wen's suicidal assault, and ultimately killed him. Over the following centuries, Yuanchong changed from a reckless prodigal into a cultivator capable of leading the Zhao Family. When Li Tui's Blood Refinement Essence formation trapped Zhao Family cultivators at Dragon-Locking Pool, Yuanchong arrived from a thousand li away to save Zhao Mengyao and break the formation. He was overwhelmed by Li Tui—then disguised as Zhou Jin—and was defeated in a single exchange. Personality

As the Third Young Master, Yuanchong is arrogant, impulsive, cruel, and highly conscious of status. He treats Li Tui's poverty as grounds for contempt and uses his authority to demand humiliation, violence, and obedience. His malice is often childish and reactive: resistance from Zhao Hao or Li Tui provokes anger because he expects others to submit automatically 7 8 12.

Beneath his indolence, however, he is observant and suspicious. He recognizes Zhao Hao's hatred, notices that Li Tui is more cautious than obedient, and uses the story of a punished steward to threaten Li Tui without issuing an explicit accusation 8 14.
