First Appearance Chapter 1: “Transmigrated?” 1

Background

Before transmigrating, Bai Yuze was a hardcore otaku dissatisfied with the plot of Classroom of the Elite. A glowing copy of the novel appeared in his darkened room; after he tested it with his wooden Lake Toya sword, touching the book rendered him unconscious. 1

He awoke on a bus in an altered version of the novel's world, where Advanced Nurturing High School had become a university. Newly received memories established him as a Class A student, while his prior knowledge let him immediately recognize Kushida Kikyo and other characters. 1

During the bus incident, Bai Yuze alone noticed the old woman's abnormal transformation. He intervened against Koenji Rokusuke, survived the woman's massacre by concealing what he knew, and recovered a vermilion sphere from her discarded skin suit. 2 3

After his first death at the school, the sphere activated and returned him to an earlier point in time. The subsequent events confirmed that he had absorbed the object, later identified as a Gui Dan. 6 7 9

Appearance

Bai Yuze is described as reasonably good-looking, though his fixation on novels, anime, and merchandise gives him a conspicuous “dead otaku” aura. 1

  • Keeps a wooden Lake Toya sword, originally purchased after watching Gintama. 1
  • Bears three unexplained slash-like marks on his left wrist during the Rules Horror trial. 16 17
  • Sustains injuries frequently in the Minzhai, including an impaled palm during his battle with the Male Corpse. 44

Personality

Bai Yuze is cautious, analytical, and highly aware that supernatural rules and apparent evidence can be manipulated. He often conceals his knowledge by acting harmless or foolish, believing that drawing attention is dangerous. 3 43

He is also vindictive and pragmatic. Following his resurrection, he immediately exploits Kamuro Masumi's shoplifting to coerce her into helping him retaliate against the student responsible for his death. In the Minzhai, he is willing to deceive hostile entities, use monsters against one another, and treat enemies as expendable tools. 7 30 48

Despite his ruthlessness, Bai Yuze becomes increasingly invested in his companions' survival and growth. He protects Yukino and Yuigahama, uses humor to reduce tension, and bluntly challenges Yuigahama's tendency to leave every decision to others. 33 37 45

Abilities & Skills

Gui Dan Absorption

Bai Yuze absorbed the vermilion Gui Dan after dying, gaining supernatural benefits while remaining physically human. 6 9 45

  • His dreams can reveal locations and events he will later experience, such as the corridor, long-limbed creature, and ruined house. 9
  • The Gui Dan is associated with misfortune for its holder. 9 13
  • Horikita Manabu warns him not to reveal his absorption to others inside Rules Horror instances. 13
  • He confirms that Gui Dan enhancement has not turned him into a supernatural entity. 45

Enhanced Perception and Cognition

Bai Yuze can see his surroundings with his eyes closed and navigate darkness through unusually strong night vision. 1 9

  • His reaction speed, observation, and cognitive processing improve after the Gui Dan's blessing. 13
  • He detects Yukino's approach through her footsteps before she can reach him in the basement. 45
  • He notices minute physiological signs, including Yukino's pupil contraction when corrosive water injures her. 45
  • His vision can still be exploited: the Ghost Infants attempt to kill him by physically covering his eyes and making him believe he can still see normally. 46

Accelerated Healing

Bai Yuze's wounds heal more quickly than an ordinary human's. 45

  • His palm begins healing after being impaled during the fight with the Male Corpse. 45
  • Healing does not make him immune to pain or prevent serious injury. 44 45

Loop Memory Preservation

Bai Yuze discovers that self-inflicted death can trigger a “life review,” allowing memories from prior loops to reach his later self. 24 25

  • Through recovered memories, he learns that the group is already in its fifth loop. 25
  • He deduces that the presumed fourth floor may actually be the Minzhai basement. 24
  • He plants scattered notes for his future self, signing them as “Yang Peng” to preserve information against the anomaly's alterations. 24
  • The method requires him to deliberately cut his wrist and endure the consequences of death and reset. 24 25

Strategy and Deception

Bai Yuze excels at identifying contradictions, manipulating opponents, and coordinating plans without alerting hostile observers.

  • He distinguishes unreliable rules and hints by comparing their inconsistencies and the supernatural influence associated with differently colored doors. 43
  • He uses a “montage lie” to mislead Zhu Daqiang and exposes Yuan Xing's disguise as a blade. 32 33
  • He silently coordinates with Yukino through notes while Yuan Xing monitors the room. 31 32
  • He uses Yamauchi Haruki's corpse to bargain for the basement key. 43
  • He communicates with Yang Peng through deliberately coded riddles when a hostile entity traps him and Yukino. 50

Improvised Combat

Bai Yuze can use available Zhenxie Guiqi and environmental tools against supernatural threats.

  • He uses Molotov cocktails to burn Room 105 and confront its resident entity. 23
  • He recognizes that the second-floor kitchen knife deters supernatural entities as a Zhenxie Guiqi. 33
  • He defeats the Male Corpse by throwing the kitchen knife into its head and driving a scalpel into its neck, though the victory leaves him badly injured. 44
  • He destroys Yuan Xing's final means of resurrection after Yuan Xing possesses Yamauchi Haruki. 39
