Background / History

While alive, Zhu Daqiang had a family and a stable life, but became addicted to gambling and drugs. He lost his house, car, and marriage; after his wife remarried, he neglected the child left in his care, who starved to death. His little finger was later cut off by debt collectors. 27

After becoming a supernatural resident of the Minzhai’s second floor, he retained memories and grudges from his life. He lived in Room 207, where he was locked in a bitter rivalry with Yuan Xing, whom he despised as a “two-faced” debt collector. 27 29

Zhu kept a so-called “Confession” diary, but Bai Yuze judged these writings to be self-serving attempts to soothe his conscience rather than evidence of genuine repentance. 27

Appearance

Zhu Daqiang manifests as a pot-bellied, oily-looking middle-aged man carrying a kitchen knife. A deep cut encircles his neck, leaving his head loosely attached and capable of detaching from his body. 27 31

Personality

Zhu is volatile, selfish, and deeply competitive. He reacts violently to interruptions, initially attacking Bai Yuze’s group because he believed they had ruined his gambling “good fortune.” 27

His rivalry with Yuan Xing dominates his decisions. Bai Yuze exploits this insecurity merely by threatening to clean Yuan Xing’s room instead, prompting Zhu to immediately invite Bai and Yukino into Room 207 despite his earlier hostility. 28 29

Although outwardly aggressive, Zhu is cowardly and desperate to survive. He hides after being incapacitated, attempts to negotiate when cornered, and abandons reason once his survival is threatened. 31 32
