Background / History

While alive, Yuan Xing was a hoodlum who worked as a debt collector. Unable to find a wife, he entered an incestuous marriage with his mentally disabled sister. She died from complications after childbirth, while their mentally disabled child was later drowned in a river after Yuan Xing offended the wrong people. Yuan Xing himself was retaliated against and had his eyes gouged out 27.

After death, he became a second-floor supernatural resident who retained memories and intelligence from his life. He occupied Room 205 and maintained a fierce grudge against Zhu Daqiang, another resident entity 27 29 30.

Appearance

Yuan Xing initially manifests as a tall, burly man with empty eye sockets.

• His eyeballs can be detached and placed elsewhere, including on a ceiling, to observe intruders 29.
• He can illuminate a room by snapping his fingers despite appearing eyeless 29.
• When his knife disguise is destroyed, his underlying form is revealed as black mist 32.

Personality

Yuan Xing is observant, calculating, and willing to negotiate when it benefits his survival. Unlike an unthinking monster, he recognizes Bai Yuze's abnormal composure and correctly infers that Bai has either repeatedly died or knows future events 29.

He is also deceptive and opportunistic. He monitors Bai Yuze's group through his hidden eyes, offers a fraudulent weapon in exchange for Room 207's key, and later conceals himself within the weapon to continue spying on them 29 30 32. His hostility toward Zhu Daqiang is open and immediate, though both entities are ultimately driven by their desire to escape the residence 27 30.

Detached Eye Surveillance

Yuan Xing can remove and remotely position his eyeballs to observe areas beyond his immediate location.

• His eyes were hidden on the ceiling of Room 205, allowing him to watch Bai Yuze and Yukino 29.
• Bai Yuze deduces that Yuan Xing had also used his eyes to monitor the stairwell and overhear the group's plans 30.

Weapon Mimicry

Yuan Xing can transform himself into or conceal himself within a blade.

After his weapon disguise is severed, Yuan Xing manifests as black mist.

Yuan Xing can persist through his detached eyes and possess a dead body.
