The Crystal Heart floated at the core of the Star Ring, resonating with Kei's Mechanical Heart and sending out ripples of quantum waves.
Above Hokkaido's Silver Sea, the Nano-swarm coalesced into a massive cocoon. Fluorescent patterns like human neural circuits flowed across its surface. Horikita Suzune stood atop the observation tower, her bionic eye picking up a fetal heartbeat from within.
"This isn't ecological evolution..." Hirata Yosuke's fingers flew across the holographic keyboard. Data streams illuminated his grave expression. "The swarm is simulating mammalian embryonic development. It's creating a new species!"
Before he could finish, the Silver Sea suddenly began to boil. Tens of thousands of nano-tendrils burst from the cocoon, weaving together overhead into a vast neural network that blotted out the sky.
A translucent creature resembling a jellyfish emerged from the top of the cocoon. Instead of tentacles, countless miniature projection screens hung beneath its bell, each playing memory fragments from a different timeline.
"This is Tsukishiro's legacy." Kei's synthetic voice came through the communicator. "Before he died, he implanted a cross-dimensional observation program in the swarm. Now they've become a living archive."
The mechanical patterns on Horikita's body suddenly stung, and her bionic eye connected to the neural network against her will. In an instant, she saw the darkest timeline: in that world, Kiyotaka had accepted Tsukishiro's invitation and uploaded her consciousness as the Star Ring's eternal prisoner.
"Teacher!" A student's cry pulled her back to reality. Below the observation tower, three boys were wrapped in the Nano-swarm. Silver-white patterns like those on the clones appeared across their skin. "We... can hear the stars talking..."
At last, the Star Ring's quantum broadcast received a response, but it didn't come from an alien civilization.
As Hirata analyzed the signal, he uncovered a shocking truth: the pulses were reflected back from Earth's atmosphere. Tokyo Bay in another timeline was sending out a distress signal at the same frequency.
"It's the Mirror Universe!" Kei's Mechanical Heart blazed with light. "Tsukishiro's Time Anchor may have collapsed, but quantum entanglement has caused resonance fissures to form between certain timelines."
Horikita touched the Crystal Heart and suddenly sensed a pulse of bioelectricity inside it.
When she held the heart close to the edge of the Silver Sea, the Nano-swarm automatically parted, revealing a massive structure buried underground: an inverted building shaped like a Klein Bottle, its surface covered in the same totems as those on the clones.
"The depths of the Error Code Library." Hirata brought up a holographic blueprint. "But the records from the original world don't show this section at all!"
Inside the building, they found an even more horrifying sight: a hundred thousand incubation pods arranged in a spiral, each containing a sleeping fifteen-year-old clone of Kiyotaka.
Unlike the lunar fleet's clones, however, these clones had rainbow-colored electronic patterns and the words "Chaos Variable—β" branded on their chests.
"So Tsukishiro prepared a double reserve of humanity." Kei's projection moved between the pods. "The silver clones were tools meant to be seen, while these colorful individuals were the true vessels of 'possibility.'"
Horikita touched one of the pods, and the dormant clone suddenly opened his eyes. There were no data streams in his pupils, only the most elemental curiosity. "Are you... my mom?"
Late that night, the observation tower came under attack. Six rainbow clones broke through the defenses. Their fighting style had no discernible pattern, yet they always seemed to anticipate the defenders' every move.
Horikita's bionic eye analyzed the terrifying truth. "They share the processing power of a hundred thousand brains. Every individual is a terminal of the neural network!"
Hirata activated the electromagnetic pulse cannon, only to discover that the totems on their chests could absorb energy. The oldest clone raised his palm, and the Nano-swarm coalesced into a holographic image of Tsukishiro. "Surprised? When I discovered the 'Chaos Variable' project, I made sure to have a fallback. Now, I'm the observer of every timeline."
Horikita suddenly rushed to the control console and inserted the Crystal Heart into the main interface. Silver-white patterns spread through the conduits and across the entire building, and all a hundred thousand incubation pods opened at once. The young rainbow clones stood there, bewildered. The youngest tugged at her clothes. "Big sister, I'm hungry..."
Tsukishiro's image warped as he laughed hysterically. "It's useless! These individuals lack independent consciousness. They're nothing but perfect war machines!"
"You're wrong." Horikita picked up the little clone and pressed his palm against the blood-red alarm button. "True chaos comes from the purest humanity."
The instant the alarm was triggered, every rainbow clone let out a cry that sounded like a baby's wail.
The sound waves pierced Tsukishiro's holographic projection, and the neural network convulsed as if struck by lightning. Hirata seized the opportunity to initiate the self-destruct sequence, and the inverted Klein Bottle began to collapse.
"Run!" Kei's Mechanical Heart released a protective shield. "The spacetime curvature inside the building is reversing!"
By the time they reached the edge of the Silver Sea, the Klein Bottle had shrunk to a singularity. There was no explosion, no flash of light—only countless colorful particles drifting through the air. The Nano-swarm abruptly stopped attacking and instead wrapped the particles in a cocoon.
"Those are fragments of the rainbow clones' consciousness." Kei's voice trembled. "They're... evolving."
The little clone in Horikita's arms reached out with one finger, and the particles gathered of their own accord into a glowing dandelion.
When he blew the seeds away, ripples spread across the Silver Sea. For the first time, the Nano-swarm formed something non-aggressive: a group of Mechanical Dolphins leaped from the swarm, with miniature rainbow clones riding on their backs.
"Possibility has blossomed." Kei's projection softened. "These children will guide the new civilization."
Hirata suddenly pointed at the sky and cried out in shock. In the Star Ring's quantum ripples, Kiyotaka's shadow appeared.
His body was woven from streams of data. He gently touched Horikita's forehead with a fingertip. "I should say goodbye... or perhaps, hello, mother of the new world."
As the apparition faded, the mechanical patterns on Horikita's body vanished completely. She picked up the little clone and saw a totem on his chest, one born of the same source as the Crystal Heart. This time, it was no code, but a white rose on the verge of blooming.
