History

Founding and the Five Kage Summit

Konohagakure was jointly founded by Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha after the Land of Fire declared victory in its external wars. The Land of Fire Daimyo and its nobles approved the “One Country, One Village” system; Hashirama became the First Hokage, while Madara became Hokage Assistant and a candidate to succeed him alongside Tobirama Senju. Its establishment helped end the Warring States period and prompted the other major nations to create their own hidden villages 9.

Konohagakure hosted the first Five Kage Summit. Hashirama proposed distributing the Tailed Beasts to create a balance of power and an alliance among the five great nations; Konohagakure retained the Nine-Tails, while the remaining beasts were divided among the other villages in exchange for payment 23 24.

At the time, Konohagakure was considered overwhelmingly powerful due to Hashirama and Madara. Tobirama openly implied that the village could simply keep every Tailed Beast if the other Kage rejected the arrangement 23.

Alliance with Uzushiogakure

Konohagakure maintained a close early alliance with Uzushiogakure. The Senju and Uzumaki were related, and Hashirama’s marriage to Mito Uzumaki further tied the villages together 43. Under Tobirama, Konohagakure retained the Uzumaki crest on the backs of its shinobi uniforms as a symbol of that relationship 126.

Following Hashirama’s death, Mito continued personally sending gifts to Uzushiogakure to preserve the alliance 215. The relationship later deteriorated after Hiruzen Sarutobi and Shimura Danzō were implicated in the coalition siege of Uzushiogakure 214 222.

First Shinobi World War

Hashirama’s death removed Konohagakure’s greatest deterrent. Kumogakure initiated the First Shinobi World War, with Kirigakure and Iwagakure joining the conflict against the Land of Fire 133.

Tobirama assembled the heads of Konoha’s clans for pre-war mobilization. The Uchiha Clan alone reported fifty jonin, two hundred chunin, and two hundred genin ready for battle 134. During the war, the Uchiha and Hyuga clans halted Iwagakure’s advance, while Takenaka Kaguya prevented Kirigakure’s fleet from entering the Land of Fire 135.

Uzushiogakure Crisis

Shimura Danzō later promised Konohagakure’s covert support to the coalition preparing to annihilate Uzushiogakure, while planning to use Impure World Reincarnation against Takenaka Kaguya 206. Hiruzen’s role in provoking the siege placed Konohagakure in danger of retaliation 214 215.

Mito forced Hiruzen to abdicate in an attempt to appease Takenaka and protect the village 215. Takenaka nevertheless entered Konohagakure, broke the Konoha Barrier, and injured both Hiruzen and Danzō before negotiating with Mito 217. Under Mito’s leadership, Konoha’s clans accepted severe demands against the Sarutobi and Shimura clans to avert further destruction 219.

Danzō died after activating the Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Jutsu during his confrontation with Takenaka. Hiruzen and Orochimaru escaped through Reverse Summoning 221.

Second Shinobi World War

Konohagakure became isolated after the Uzushiogakure incident and was attacked by Kumogakure, Iwagakure, Sunagakure, Amegakure, and Kirigakure. Tsunade stated that the village could maintain the front temporarily but risked collapse if the war continued 222.

Tsunade requested Uzushiogakure’s aid. Takenaka Kaguya declined direct intervention but allowed her to recruit volunteers, including more than twenty Uzushiogakure ninja and his sons Changge and Muge 223. Konohagakure later withdrew its forces from the Land of Rain after Uzushiogakure’s intervention shifted the balance of the war 227 229.

Later Era and Unification War

After the Second Shinobi World War, Konohagakure was ranked first among the Five Great Hidden Villages. Its strength rested on the Hyuga and Uchiha clans, the spread of Rokushiki training, powerful individual shinobi, and the improved Anbu led by Hatake Sakumo 242.

During Uzushiogakure’s Unification War, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki resurrected Hashirama, Madara, Tobirama, and Minato Namikaze to oppose Takenaka Kaguya. The resurrected shinobi retained their memories but were compelled to stop him 373.

Takenaka descended upon Konohagakure as the Black Divine Dragon and incapacitated most of the village’s shinobi with Conqueror’s Haki. The fighters left standing included Hashirama, Madara, Tobirama, Minato, Tsunade, Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Hatake Sakumo, Kushina, Kakashi, the Hyuga twins, Might Guy, Fugaku, Shisui, Itachi, Naruto, and Sasuke 374.
