Background / History
Milton comes from the Graves family, a rising wizarding family. His father married a Muggle woman despite his grandfather’s opposition, leaving their household disliked and ostracized by the older Graves. Milton initially discusses this rejection with surprising composure, even joking about the family’s short pedigree 39 198 393.
By his fourth year at Hogwarts, Milton has shared a dormitory with Scott for three years. Music is his central ambition, rather than becoming a powerful wizard, but pressure surrounding his family eventually leads him to sacrifice the talent he values most 5 30 90 115.
Appearance
Milton has long, smooth, light-brown hair and a frail-looking build. His appearance is sufficiently androgynous that Scott’s mother initially mistakes him for a girl 5 103 415.
- Long hair: Lockhart selects him to portray a banshee because he has “the smoothest long hair in the entire classroom” 12.
- Visible distress: When upset, he becomes pale, tearful, or listless; after Lockhart’s lesson, his normally smooth hair is dishevelled 12 103.
- Stage attire: Performs his Vienna recital in formal wear 415.
Personality
Milton is sensitive, artistic, and romantic. He values a “sense of ritual,” preferring to announce important news properly rather than casually over dinner. Criticism can overwhelm him: complaints about an experimental composition make him question his talent and retreat to the dormitory windowsill to cry 5 6.
He is unusually poor at lying or concealing his feelings. Eddie regards him as the roommate least likely to deceive anyone, while Scott believes Lockhart notices Milton’s contempt for his classroom performances. His sensitivity also helps him recognize when Scott is withholding difficult news 12 14 417.
Milton dislikes troubling others and treats excessive favors as a burden on their recipient. This concern can become extreme: he initially refuses help with his vow and even attacks his friends to stop them entering Medea’s hall. Nevertheless, he later accepts their support without demanding that they sacrifice their own abilities for him 103 111 114 116.
Following the loss of his musical talent, he becomes more direct and less easily upset, openly requesting combat training and showing greater confidence in his schoolwork. His emotional sensitivity returns after his talent is restored, but he later develops the confidence to pursue a public musical career 159 202 212 376 412.
- Physical boundaries: Usually resists close contact; a shoulder pat is the most intimate gesture he ordinarily permits even from friends 370.
- Romantic attraction: Says he has never felt a spark for either a girl or a boy. When Scott suggests he might be asexual, Milton answers uncertainly rather than adopting the label definitively 103.
- Recognition: Finds Slughorn’s attention uncomfortable when it comes from his father’s political importance rather than his own talent 450.
Abilities & Skills
Musical Performance and Composition
- Cello: His principal demonstrated instrument. His first Vienna recital consists of ten original compositions and earns a standing ovation 415.
- Composition: Writes emotionally expressive works, including Ravenclaw Impression, Hidden Maternal Love, and Hogwarts 415.
- Experimentation: Explores unfamiliar musical styles, though some early experiments are so unpleasant to nearby students that they provoke complaints 6.
- Professional potential: Becomes recognized as a musical prodigy in the Muggle world and receives support from an influential teacher for his Vienna recital 412 415.
- Other instruments: Can perform Musical Magic with Scottish bagpipes, but less effectively than with his cello 548.
Musical Magic
Milton describes his method as using emotion to drive magic and allowing that magic to influence reality 520.
- Fatigue relief: Gradually reduces Scott’s tiredness during a performance. The fatigue already dispelled does not return when the music stops 520.
- Mental clarity: Produces an effect resembling the Ravenclaw Diadem’s enhancement, but many times weaker and temporary 520.
- Multiple listeners: Unlike the Diadem, his music can affect several people at once 520.
- Listener engagement: Scott experiences a weaker effect when distracted and a stronger effect when immersed in the performance 520.
- Current limits: The demonstrated effects are weak and affect everyone who hears the music, without distinguishing friend from foe 520.
- Development goals: Plans to associate different music and emotions with different effects. Selective support for allies and interference against enemies remain suggestions, not demonstrated abilities 520.
Spellcasting and Duelling
- Known spells: Uses the Drying Charm on his hair and successfully stuns Eddie during his attempt to stop the group entering Medea’s hall 114 369.
- Combat limitations: Initially struggles to translate knowledge into movement. George defeats him with a Dancing Spell followed by a Disarming Charm 204.
- Training progress: Improves through practice, although his increased magical power does not automatically make him an effective fighter 204 212.
- Purpose: Pursues combat training for self-protection, not as a replacement for his musical ambitions 290.
Academic Skills
- Written examinations: Consistently earns excellent written scores 212.
- Potions discipline: Stops working when Snape’s intimidation disrupts his concentration, sacrificing speed to avoid mistakes 30.
- Emotional vulnerability: Distress over his father later causes repeated brewing errors and a five-point deduction from Snape 393.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Stephanie Grubbly-Plank — Facilitates the restoration of his talent through the Book of Prometheus and the Knowledge Bank 376.
- Medea Slytherin — Responsible for the talent-for-magic exchange. Later pressures him to exchange all his magic for music; her agents subsequently target him as leverage against Scott and the Graves family 90 115 116 548 549.
- Father, Mr. Graves — A strained relationship shaped by family pressure, apparent remarriage, and withheld information. Milton nevertheless helps improve his father’s standing with the Rowle family and later reunites with him 198 221 385 545.
- Mother — A Muggle whose departure deeply affects him. Milton hopes musical fame will help her find him, and later comforts her when they reunite 103 412 546.
- Grandfather, Old Mr. Graves — Disapproves of Milton’s parents’ marriage and treats Milton coldly. Milton is visibly frightened of him, but mourns his death and confides in Scott about the family dispute over his funeral 39 551 553.
- Severus Snape — A teacher Milton avoids when possible; Snape deliberately intimidates him during Potions 30.
- Gilderoy Lockhart — Publicly humiliates Milton by making him act as a banshee in class 12.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Musical Obsession and the Vow
A mysterious piece absorbs Milton’s attention, leaving him exhausted and returning late from the Classical Music Club. Although the club abandons the piece, Milton alone continues hearing its music. He eventually reveals that he has exchanged his musical inspiration and talent for improved magic, hoping better magical aptitude will make others happier 75 82 90.
During Christmas, Milton runs away and visits Scott after his mother leaves home. He admits that he sacrificed music to support her and now regrets the decision. His attempt to revisit the exchange leaves him unconscious in a dungeon, prompting his roommates to investigate despite his objections 103 104 110 111.
Milton tries to prevent them entering the hidden hall by stunning Eddie. Once inside, Medea offers him exceptional musical talent in exchange for all his magic. With the Grey Lady’s intervention, he rejects further sacrifice involving his friends and later decides to return to music even without his former talent 114 115 116 149.
Independence and Restored Talent
Milton is hurt by news that his father intends to marry Mrs. Zabini, having hoped his parents might reconcile. He later arranges to live alone in London, with Eddie helping him leave discreetly and Flitwick declining to expose his secret 198 239 240.
He also leaves his position as a reserve member of the Weird Sisters. Caccini eventually proposes reversing their trades, and Grubbly-Plank makes the restoration possible. Milton regains his inspiration and begins composing again 290 369 370 376 377.
Vienna Recital and Family Revelations
After becoming known as a Muggle-world prodigy, Milton pursues fame partly so that his missing mother will see his name. His first recital takes place at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where his original cello compositions win increasingly enthusiastic applause 412 415.
Scott notices Milton’s disguised father attending with a Muggle woman he suspects is Milton’s mother. They leave without speaking to Milton. After the Carrow siblings attack Scott around the concert, the students return safely to Hogwarts, where Flitwick privately discusses Milton’s parents with him. Milton subsequently considers leaving Hogwarts to pursue music full-time 415 417 418.
Babel and Musical Magic
When Milton doubts how he can contribute to Babel’s ambitions, Scott urges him to become an outstanding musician whose work can inspire people and convey ideals. Milton quickly turns that encouragement into a working method of casting magic through music 517 518.
His first demonstrated support performance uses Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A Minor. Scott, Roger, and Eddie encourage him to strengthen its effects and develop control over who receives them 520.
Threats Against the Graves Family
When Medea seeks an item from the Graves collection, Scott offers the family refuge. Milton comforts his mother and stays with her in the Different Dimension while enemies repeatedly intrude upon his London apartment 546 548.
Milton helps Scott lure out a watcher. The apparent kidnapping that follows captures an alchemy puppet disguised as Milton, while the real Milton remains safe. Medea later detects the substitution, and the operation fails to reveal her true base 548 549 550.
The conflict ends with Old Mr. Graves’s death and a funeral attended by Dumbledore, Flitwick, and Babel members. Milton privately reveals that the coffin contains stones rather than his grandfather’s body, and that his father and uncle have argued bitterly over carrying out the older man’s orders 553.
