The Fiancée
In the castle's grand drawing room, the enormous chandelier reflected a mesmerizing glow under the candlelight. The nobles of Chier Prefecture City were all gathered here.
"I heard that Count Weide's son has returned. I wonder how Lady Weide will handle this."
"Who knows? But one thing is certain: Lady Weide will not relinquish her power."
"Lady Weide was ruthless. And it was her bad luck that her precious son died on a woman's belly. It's laughable," the nobles whispered among themselves.
Who among the nobles of Chier Prefecture City didn't know that Lady Weide was a domineering and tyrannical woman? However, living in Chier Prefecture City, they could only grumble about her in secret, but dared not offend Lady Weide openly.
"Lady Weide has arrived."
The nobles who had been gossiping immediately stopped and turned to look at Lady Weide, who was descending the stairs. Lady Weide was still dressed in such luxurious clothes and her posture was still so haughty.
Lady Weide enjoyed the attention she received and walked down the stairs with her head slightly raised.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Lady Weide said with a smile, "Today is a joyous day. My two poor children have suffered for eight years. Today they are finally back."
At that moment, two people suddenly emerged from the stairs.
A young man dressed in a sharp black gentleman's suit and a blonde woman in a white dress walked out together. Many nobles' eyes lit up.
Although Jenny's attire was simple and plain, it complemented her looks and figure, along with her gentle and pure temperament, causing everyone's hearts to flutter. Many young noblemen decided to inquire about this woman later.
"Jenny, Keane, come here," Lady Weide greeted warmly.
Jenny and Keane came down the stairs and stood beside Lady Weide. Lady Weide introduced them warmly, "This is Jenny, look what a beautiful girl she is. And this handsome young man is Keane." Lady Weide sighed, "Jenny and Keane have finally gotten through those difficult days, but their mother, my dear sister..." Lady Weide's eyes reddened, and she seemed about to cry.
"Madam, if Madam knew how much you care about her, she would be very touched." An aged voice rang out, and Lambert and Lin Feng walked out from the side.
Lady Weide glanced at Lambert.
Lambert was the second wife's most loyal servant. Even when the second wife fell into misfortune, Lambert remained by her side without complaint or regret.
Jenny and Keane, however, were quite indignant.
They knew that their mother's death and their eight years of suffering were all caused by the old woman before them. Jenny knew how to be patient, but fourteen-year-old Keane said sarcastically with some resentment, "Auntie, why haven't you come to see us in these eight years? We've missed you terribly."
Lady Weide's expression remained unchanged as she sighed, "Over the years, I've been preoccupied with various matters in Chier Prefecture City and haven't had a moment to myself. Every time I think about this, I feel I owe you and your brother so much."
Lin Feng smiled and said directly, "Lady Weide, Count Weide has passed away, Keane is his heir. Keane has rushed back this time to inherit the position of city lord. I wonder when Lady Weide plans to let Keane take over the position of city lord?"
These words immediately silenced the entire living room.
All the nobles in the room understood that the main event was about to begin.
Meanwhile, the nobles all looked at Lin Feng with suspicion, wondering where this hothead had come from and was asking him such a direct question.
"Mr. Lin Feng," Lady Weide said coldly, her face hardening, "I am very grateful to you for protecting Keane and Jenny to Chier Prefecture City. However, Keane's succession as city lord is an internal matter of our family, and it is not appropriate for an outsider like you to interfere."
Lin Feng's expression remained unchanged. He turned his head and smiled at Keane, because he remembered that Keane's next sentence in the original book was very powerful.
Sure enough, Keane immediately retorted, "Who said Brother Feng is an outsider?"
"What else could we be but outsiders?" Lady Weide's face was very cold.
Keane was taken aback, looked at Lin Feng, and raised his head, saying, "Brother Feng, you are my sister's fiancé, how can you be an outsider?"
"Fiancé?" Lady Weide was stunned.
Jenny was stunned.
Lin Feng chuckled inwardly; these were exactly the words he had been waiting for.
Jenny blushed.
"Well?" Keane proudly raised his head. "My future brother-in-law is qualified to say this, isn't he, Auntie? Father is dead, my eldest brother is dead, and I am now the first heir."
Lady Weide fell silent.
Everyone in the arena was watching Lady Weide. Keane's succession to the position of city lord was a matter of course, protected by imperial law. They were eager to see what Lady Weide would do.
"Haha, Keane, what's the rush?" Lady Weide said with a smile. "Your father is dead, and now you are his only son, so you are naturally the first heir. The position of city lord is definitely yours; no one will take it from you."
"Thank you very much, Auntie," Keane said with a smile. "When will I take over as city lord?" Lady Weide chuckled and said, "No rush, no rush. Keane, you're not an adult yet. How about this, wait two more years, until you celebrate your coming-of-age ceremony, then you can take over as city lord."
"Two years later?" Keane's eyes widened.
But Lady Weide smiled and said, "Keane, my good boy, you are not yet an adult and do not have enough ability to manage a city. Don't worry, in two years, you will definitely become the city lord of Chier Prefecture City."
He'll only succeed as city lord two years later? What can't happen in two years? How can Keane possibly endure being under Lady Weide's thumb for two whole years?
"I believe I am capable," Keane said firmly.
Lady Weide's expression turned serious. "Keane, calm down. You're still just a child. The lord of Chier Prefecture City governs millions of imperial citizens. You can't shoulder that responsibility yet."
At this moment, Jenny, who was standing next to Keane, spoke up, "Auntie, the imperial law does not say that one must be an adult to inherit the position of city lord."
Lady Weide looked at Jenny.
Jenny stared defiantly at Lady Weide, the two women of different ages locked in a silent gaze.
"Yes," Lady Weide said with a smile, "Imperial law does not explicitly state that one must be an adult to inherit the position of city lord. However..."
Lady Weide said with some sorrow, "After your father passed away some time ago, when the clan learned of this place, they originally intended for your eldest brother to inherit the position of city lord, but, my poor child..."
"Upon learning that Keane was only fourteen years old, the clan issued an order: Chier Prefecture City is one of the most important county cities in our Northwest Province, and it is adjacent to the provincial capital ' Basil.' The management of Chier County is extremely important. The clan ordered that Keane must come of age before he can take over as the city lord."
"Clan?"
Keane and Jenny were both taken aback.
Hearing that this was the clan leader's order, Jenny and Keane were somewhat bewildered. As members of the Jax family, Jenny and Keane knew the meaning of clan.
"Auntie, did the clan really issue such an order?" Jenny stared at Lady Weide.
Lady Weide frowned, looking at Jenny: "Jenny, do you think I would falsely issue clan orders? Until Keane inherits the title of lord, I will temporarily oversee all affairs of the county."
"I am the future city lord, and I have the right to decide who will be the acting city lord," Keane shouted in dissatisfaction.
Lady Weide looked at Keane with a cold gaze.
Lin Feng, who had been silent all along, finally spoke up, "Lady Weide, your so-called clan shouldn't have issued an order appointing you as the acting city lord, right?"
Lady Weide paused.
Even if she were bold, she wouldn't dare to fabricate clan orders.
Jenny and Keane both belong to the Jax Family, which is one of the most powerful clans in the entire Jax Family O'Brien Empire.
The Northwest Province, one of the seven major provinces of the entire O'Brien Empire, is controlled by the Jax Family.
Jenny and Keane's father, Weide Jax, was merely a collateral member of the Jax Family. If it weren't for the Jax Family's influence, how could such a cowardly fellow as Weide Jax have become the lord of a county town?
Now Weide is dead.
From the Jax Family's perspective, the Chier Prefecture City should naturally still be managed by members of the Jax Family.
Although Lady Weide married Weide, Lady Weide was not of the Jax Family blood, and it was unlikely that the Jax Family would allow Lady Weide to take on the position of acting lord of the city.
"Hmph, if it weren't for those old fogies in the clan," Lady Weide thought to herself with resentment.
No matter how powerful Lady Weide was, she couldn't compare to the Jax family. With a single word from them, this noble lady might be begging in the streets tomorrow.
"I'm not an adult yet, but my sister is. I will send someone to the provincial capital, ' Basil.' I believe the elders of the clan will appoint my sister as the acting city lord, not you!"
Keane said proudly.
The conflict between Jenny and Keane, siblings, and Lady Weide is impossible to conceal.
With just a few words, the truth was revealed at the banquet. After all Jenny and Keane's mother was essentially persecuted to death by Lady Weide. Jenny and Keane had also been the target of assassination attempts.
"Fine, fine, if you're so capable, then go ahead and petition the clan. I really want to see if the clan will entrust the important task of acting city lord to an eighteen-year-old girl." Lady Weide raised her chin and said arrogantly.
Keane's face was also full of stubbornness.
At fourteen, a boy is at his most rebellious stage. The more arrogant Lady Weide is, the more Keane wants to rebel. Keane also believes that the clan will definitely stand by his side, after all, he is a member of the Jax Family.
In fact, Lin Feng had considered using overwhelming force to kill Lady Weide at the banquet. This would not only get rid of this troublesome woman, but also intimidate the nobles of Chier Prefecture City.
But after careful consideration, Lin Feng decided against it. After all, Keane had only just arrived in Chier Prefecture City, and his family's appointment letter hadn't been issued yet, so his position was unstable. Moreover, Lady Weide had many scheming accomplices in Chier Prefecture City. If he were to kill Lady Weide directly, it would not only give others ammunition against him but could also provoke a backlash from Lady Weide's supporters. It would be a losing proposition!
This is the first chapter!
