Background / History

Tang San was raised under Tang Sect principles, particularly the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record. His rigid, stubborn disposition and use of Tang Sect methods reflect that upbringing; he also recalls a previous life as a Tang Sect disciple, ending when he jumped from Ghost Sorrow Cliff and reincarnated on Douluo Continent. 8 135

As a young disciple of Yu Xiaogang, Tang San entered the Soul Hunting Forest and chose to absorb a Ghost Vine ring while his teacher was endangered. Afterward, he found Yu Xiaogang unconscious, treated his injuries, and carried him from the forest. 28

His fortunes deteriorated after Shang An and Hotaru stripped his Blue Silver Emperor bloodline and forced six ten-year soul bones upon him. The soul bones improved his impact resistance and altered his physique, but their absorption was later linked to a decline in his aptitude. 78 98 142

Unable to accept his slowed cultivation, Tang San sought a divine inheritance. He entered the God of Suffering's Nine Trials after leaping from a cliff to evade the King of the Earth, enduring brutal ordeals in exchange for mutation, spirit power, and spirit rings. 111 114

After completing the Three-Year Agreement, Tang San returned at rank 60. He accepted the eighth trial: kill Yu Xiaogang in the cruelest manner as retribution for his suffering. 221

Appearance

Tang San's appearance changed markedly after the God of Suffering trials. On his return to Shrek, he appeared more sinister and was initially unrecognized by Dai Mubai. 118

  • His Blue Silver Grass became dark-cyan, thorned Thorn Vine after mutation. 114
  • He lost his left eye after Shang An stabbed it with a Man Faced Demon Spider leg; Divine Doctor Ye Cunxin later restored it, though its vision remained fragile and could not immediately sustain Purple Demon Eye use. 78 93
  • He later disfigured his face during a God Trial and covered a nosebleed with torn clothing. 167

Personality

Tang San is determined, resourceful, and highly persistent under pressure. He endured the God of Suffering's torturous trials because he believed power was his only route to restoring his talent and achieving revenge. 111 114

His repeated injuries, humiliation, and betrayal fostered resentment toward Shrek Academy, Spirit Hall, and several former associates. He increasingly acted with impatience and violence, snapping a guard's hand when denied entry to Shrek and attempting to kill Dai Mubai after returning from the trials. 70 118 119

He is also pragmatic when dealing with power. Although initially unwilling to compromise Tang Sect secrets, he sold the Godly Zhuge Crossbow blueprints to secure land, resources, and protection for rebuilding the sect. 141 142

Abilities & Skills

Thorn Vine Martial Soul

Tang San's Blue Silver Grass mutated through the first God of Suffering trial into a thorn-covered vine Martial Soul. 114

  • Thorn Bind — evolved from Blue Silver Bind; restrains targets and deals greater damage than its prior form. 119
  • Thorn Spike — launches sharpened, spirit-power-enhanced thorns in a ranged barrage. 119
  • The Martial Soul was decisively overpowered by Ah Yin's Blue Silver Grass during the Promotion Tournament. 145

God of Suffering Inheritance

Tang San accepted the Nine Trials of Suffering to recover from his declining aptitude. 114

  • The first trial granted Martial Soul mutation. 114
  • The second trial raised his spirit power to level 38. 114
  • The third trial raised him to level 40 and granted a God-Given Spirit Ring. 114
  • Completing the fourth trial gave him the ability to enter and leave the trial realm. 114
  • The sixth trial rewarded the spirit skill Fart Like Thunder, which Tang San found humiliating. 166
  • His eighth trial required Yu Xiaogang's cruelest possible death. 221
  • His ninth trial required the destruction of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Sect. 224

Purple Demon Eye

Tang San uses the Purple Demon Eye for perception and observation.

  • He used it to watch Tang Chen's battle with Ni Huang from a distance. 224
  • Its insufficient level left him unable to break Shi Nian's illusion, despite finding a flaw. 135
  • Backlash destroyed his injured eye; even after treatment, he could not immediately use the technique because the restored vision was too fragile. 88 93

Hidden Weapons

Tang San retains Tang Sect hidden-weapon techniques and designs.

  • Dragon Whisker Needles — used against Xiao Wu, but nullified by her Invincible Golden Body. 61
  • Zhuge Repeating Crossbow — used against Shi Nian; its bolts passed through the opponent's illusory body. 134
  • Godly Zhuge Crossbow — powerful enough that Sword Douluo compared its force to many offensive Soul Ancestor skills. 141
  • He escaped Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun using a hidden weapon and a distraction. 195

Weapon Soul Avatar

Tang San awakened a Weapon Soul Avatar when his divine power responded to Shi Nian's torture illusion. 135

  • Its attack was described as exceeding the level of a Spirit Saint. 135
  • The awakening occurred while he was immobilized in the real world by Residual Dream. 135

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Soul tool — carried drinking water and medical ointment while in the Soul Hunting Forest. 28
  • Six ten-year soul bones — enhanced his resistance to impacts and slightly changed his physique, while contributing to his reduced talent. 78 142

  • Blood-Red Stone — an object Tang San became determined to obtain, spending 2,000 Gold Soul Coins and later seeking imperial assistance to retrieve it. 146

Relationships

  • Yu Xiaogang — teacher and surrogate father figure. Tang San cared for him after the Soul Hunting Forest incident and later entrusted him with the Tang Sect; their bond became strained after Tang San's trial-induced trauma and Yu Xiaogang's drugging of him. 28 162 166 171
  • Tang Hao — father; secretly protected Tang San and Yu Xiaogang in the Soul Hunting Forest. Tang San later learned that Tang Hao was the current Clear Sky Douluo. 28 221
  • Tang Yuehua — aunt who attempted to protect him during his arrest, though their relationship cooled because of Tang San's increasingly cold behavior. 93 140
  • Tang Chen — Clear Sky Sect founder and Tang San's ancestor. Tang San initially hid his surname, then acknowledged him after learning his identity and sought his protection. 223
  • Dai Mubai — Shrek rival and recurring opponent. Tang San fought him after returning from the trials; Dai later captured and beat Tang San while his spirit power was sealed. 119 195
  • Ma Hongjun — Shrek associate who cared for Tang San during his unconsciousness, but later joined Dai Mubai in pursuing him for a bounty. 65 194 195
  • Flender — Shrek dean who saved Tang San from Xiao Wu, later injured him after mistaking him for an intruder, and ultimately declined to turn him in despite the bounty. 61 119 195
