Ch. 341The Eagle Catches the Chicks
Key plot points and events
- Earth’s intelligence reports that the Vanguard has been destroyed and the minefield near the wormhole has been cleared. The Twin Stars’ force is approaching, with two known frigates and a third, stealth-equipped object—an asteroid converted into a weapons platform. More large asteroids may conceal further defenses.
- The Twin Stars launch their assault. Earth fires as the wormhole opens, but the first craft to emerge is a cube-shaped barrier made from star core, a rare, heat-resistant mineral that weakens field-ray attacks. It unfolds into a massive shield, absorbing much of Earth’s barrage and protecting the wormhole.
- A frigate emerges behind the barrier and activates its force-field shield. A carrier follows, deploying 200 mechs and nearly 1,000 fighters.
- Rather than attack immediately, the small craft shelter behind the barrier. The barrier splits into 54 smaller shields, each carrying groups of mechs and fighters toward Earth’s defensive line. Mines and attacks detonate against the shields with little effect on the troops behind them.
- Nie Yun recognizes the tactic and reacts with surprise: the Twin Stars are using their shields to shepherd their fighters through the minefield.
Character developments and interactions
- Gustav initially assumes Earth’s defenses will be manageable, but the hidden asteroid platform and unexpected barrier make the assault more complicated. He nevertheless orders the attack to proceed.
- Nie Yun stays composed as Earth’s defenses are tested. He studies the enemy’s equipment and tactics, identifying the barrier’s protective function and questioning how the Twin Stars will cross the minefield.
- The adjutant gives Gustav the latest intelligence, including the stealth platform and the asteroid cover.
- Earth’s defenders recognize the barrier’s danger and focus their fire on it, while the Twin Stars coordinate their ships, shields, mechs, and fighters into a layered advance.
Significant themes
- Adaptation and tactical ingenuity: Both sides adjust rapidly—Earth lays mines and concentrates fire, while the Twin Stars devise a way to protect their assault force.
- Technology and countermeasures: The star-core shield demonstrates how specialized materials can blunt weapons that would otherwise be decisive.
- Escalating uncertainty: Stealth, hidden asteroid positions, and unfamiliar equipment make the battlefield difficult to assess.
- Strength through coordination: The Twin Stars’ assault depends on ships, barriers, mechs, and fighters supporting one another rather than fighting independently.
