Background / History
Garp selected Noxia while passing through the East Blue and brought him to Marineford’s Elite Training Camp roughly a year before Noxia awakened his system. Noxia regards him as the benefactor responsible for his opportunity to train at Headquarters. 1 2
At age 57, Garp returned to Marineford from a successful mission. He was enthusiastically received by the younger Marines, then immediately complained that the crowd was preventing him from reaching food. 2
During this visit, Garp delivered a letter from Noxia’s family after stopping at the East Blue’s 16th Branch. He also checked on Noxia’s standing in the Elite Training Camp, criticized his lack of visible progress, and stated that he would attend the final assessment the following year. 2
Three years before the present story, Garp became estranged from Rear Admiral Shizi following the reported death of Portgas D. Rouge during the Marine pursuit of Gol D. Roger’s family. Shizi believed Garp had personally led the pursuit that killed Rouge and her unborn child, though she also admitted that he did not know Rouge was her adopted daughter. 30
In reality, Roger entrusted his wife and child to Garp before his death. Garp later delivered an infant named Ace to residents in the East Blue and periodically visited him there. Noxia’s account of this child led Shizi to contact Garp, allowing the two former comrades to reconcile. 25 31
Appearance
Garp is an older, travel-worn Marine with disheveled hair, often presented with a broad grin and an informal bearing. 2
- Usually wears the authority of a Headquarters Vice Admiral, though his behavior is notably casual. 2
- Is associated with eating senbei, which he was audibly crunching during Shizi’s late-night call. 31
Personality
Garp is boisterous, approachable, and highly popular among younger Marines. He responds warmly to their excitement, laughs readily, and speaks with blunt confidence about the success of his missions. 2
Despite his casual manner, he holds high expectations for promising recruits. His support for Noxia took the form of a recommendation to the Elite Training Camp, but he does not hesitate to admonish Noxia for appearing stagnant and demand a top evaluation from Zephyr. 1 2
His actions regarding Ace indicate a willingness to protect an infant connected to his longtime enemy, even while the Marines were pursuing Roger’s family. 31
