Ch. 801Round two
Plot and key events
- The morning after the previous battle, an even larger Earth Alliance fleet returns to the Orb Archipelago. Le Creuset suspects a hidden third party is behind the mass-produced Extended—drugged and hypnotized soldiers captured after the fighting—and deliberately escalates the conflict to draw that party out.
- Le Creuset launches with four Slash ZAKU Phantoms. The Alliance fleet appears to leave them a clear path, but its commander reveals that unseen “guests” are meant to confront the ZAFT force.
- A large, unfamiliar black carrier opens its deck to launch three black mobile suits, identified as Hyperions. They rise using antigravity engines, technology ZAFT believed to be under its own control.
- Le Creuset links the machines to research data stolen months earlier from a classified L4 institute. He attacks the carrier, but a Hyperion absorbs his beam with beam-deflection armor.
- The Hyperions engage the ZAFT aces. Their piloting skill, accuracy, and anticipation match the ZAFT pilots’, leading them to suspect the enemy pilots are Coordinators.
- An unfamiliar voice then speaks directly into the pilots’ minds, claiming that the Hyperion pilots are “Mediators,” not incomplete beings like Coordinators. The chapter ends as this new faction’s identity and abilities are revealed only partially.
Character developments and interactions
- Le Creuset remains calculating and composed: he has used aggressive tactics as bait, but responds immediately to the new threat and orders his team to protect the Orb from a possible nuclear strike.
- The ZAFT pilots begin the sortie joking about the Alliance’s apparent retreat, but Le Creuset’s warning restores their discipline. Their confidence gives way to alarm and focused combat as the Hyperions reveal unexpected technology and skill.
- The Earth Alliance commander appears to have planned the encounter, holding fire to usher ZAFT toward the black carrier and its “guests.”
- The Hyperion pilots are introduced through their combat performance and the mysterious voice that distinguishes them from Coordinators.
Significant themes
- Hidden powers and escalating technology: The stolen research, antigravity engines, and beam-absorbing armor suggest an influential third party has entered the conflict.
- Deception and strategic baiting: Both Le Creuset and the Alliance commander use the battlefield to lure opponents into a confrontation.
- Identity and superiority: The claim that Mediators are not “incomplete” like Coordinators introduces a challenge to ZAFT’s assumptions about human enhancement.
- The threat to Orb: Le Creuset’s concern about a nuclear strike keeps the wider stakes in view even as the battle shifts to the Hyperions.
