Background & History

Ruri was born a commoner during the Warring States period. His mother, Oichi, died of typhoid when he was four and a half, while his father, Nagamasa, disappeared after leaving to gather medicine. Left alone, Ruri later refined chakra, travelled toward the safer Land of Water, and survived as a wandering ninja. 541 542

Five years before Takigakure's founding, Ruri helped the future daimyo of the Land of Waterfalls overthrow a tyrant. When Takigakure was established in Konoha's third year, the daimyo appointed him its first Takikage, despite resistance from local elders. 1 2

The appointment activated the Village Leader System, which awarded him a Truth-Seeking Orb. Ruri used it to erase Kubi Ichiro's lower left leg and Hagane Maomori's left arm, ending their attempt to establish an elder council that would reduce him to a puppet leader. He deliberately spared their lives because Takigakure still needed their combat strength. 1

Ruri built Takigakure into more than a military village. He promoted trade, irrigation, Hero Water applications, agriculture, industrial research, technology, public infrastructure, and later a five-year development plan. His policies helped raise civilian productivity and changed how other Kage governed their own nations. 11 123 212

After his death, Ruri maintained his soul through Yin-Yang Release and received assistance from the Sage of Six Paths. He eventually returned to the living world, though his survival was initially obscured by disguises and explanations involving sealed ancestral chakra. 214 215 240 252

Appearance

Ruri commonly conceals his identity through Transformation Jutsu, masks, bandages, altered clothing, and assumed names. His appearance changes further when he activates advanced sage arts or dōjutsu. 39 41 289

  • His left eye conceals a Rinnegan beneath his hair. 240
  • His right eye possesses a partial Tenseigan, later supplemented by a stronger mutated Tenseigan obtained from Otsutsuki Aiura. 440 629
  • Perfect three-sage-art fusion creates a red eye-shadow mark shaped like Takigakure's emblem on his forehead. 289
  • He wears the purple Takikage hat, marked with the character for “Waterfall,” as the symbol of his office. 1

Personality

Ruri is cautious, calculating, and highly pragmatic. Even after receiving overwhelming power, he usually evaluates long-term consequences: he crippled rather than killed Takigakure's dissidents, sealed power into Shizuka to secure Takumigakure, and repeatedly uses disguises to prevent enemies from identifying his real capabilities. 1 39 41

As a leader, he values development as much as combat power. He sees ninjutsu as a tool for production, infrastructure, and improving civilian lives rather than merely warfare. His reforms include trade systems, technological research, agriculture, public transport, and the Takigakure Orphanage. 11 123 197 483

He can be ruthless toward threats to his village or the wider world, including sealing Momoshiki alive and destroying Rōran's Human Puppets in a single overwhelming strike. However, he also protects civilians, rescues survivors, takes in disciples, and accepts responsibility for the consequences of his actions. 141 277 540

Abilities & Skills

Truth-Seeking Orbs

Ruri's first system reward was a genuine Truth-Seeking Orb containing the five elemental natures and Yin-Yang power. Initially, his limited elemental affinities made it extraordinarily chakra-intensive and prevented him from freely changing its shape. 1

  • Nullifies ordinary ninjutsu and erases targets it touches. 1
  • Can serve as an essentially impenetrable shield against non-senjutsu attacks. 1 200
  • Can transform into weapons, including Nunoboko and the Sage Staff. 123 628
  • Its early forms could not withstand powerful senjutsu and vanished after Ruri's Faith Energy-infused strike against Nue. 357
  • After attaining ultimate Yin-Yang Release, Ruri can manifest multiple Orbs and combine them freely with natural energy. 628 642

Sage Arts and Natural Energy

Ruri has mastered the sage arts of all Three Great Sage Regions: Mount Myōboku, Ryūchi Cave, and Shikkotsu Forest. He ultimately fused them into a perfect sage art. 186 275 289

  • Sage Mode enhances his physical ability, perception, chakra control, and resistance to internal attacks such as the Iburi Clan's Smoke Transformation Technique. 43 141
  • Ryūchi Cave training grants Dragon Life Reincarnation and its associated sage arts. 186
  • Perfect Sage Mode lets him manipulate enormous quantities of natural energy and use techniques such as Sage Art: Inorganic Reincarnation. 200 289
  • His Sage Mode perception can be hindered by specialized barriers, including those within the Otsutsuki Ancestral Hall. 238

Yin-Yang Release and Faith Energy

Ruri developed Yin-Yang Release through training in the Pure Land under the influence of the Sage of Six Paths and deceased Kage. He later realized that true Yin and Yang require unifying both his outward self and his manifested dark side. 214 616

  • Uses Yin-Yang Release to stabilize his soul after death. 215
  • Can purify trapped souls and form destructive Yin-Yang blade beams. 255
  • Ultimate Yin-Yang Release allows the creation and control of Truth-Seeking Orbs. 539 628
  • Faith Energy greatly amplifies his senjutsu and blade techniques, but its conflict with incomplete Truth-Seeking Orbs previously caused his weapons to disappear. 357 537

Kenjutsu and Iaijutsu

Ruri is an elite swordsman whose Iaijutsu can extinguish Fire Release through sword intent, cut through combined enemy techniques, and evolve further through Ten-Tails chakra and Yin-Yang Release. 34 236 629

  • Uses One-Blade Slash, a high-output technique capable of damaging the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and Tailed Beast-enhanced Susanoo. 629 642
  • Can generate immense blade energy without a physical sword. 102 345
  • His full-power Nunoboko slash split Rōran, its walls, and the surrounding desert. 277
  • He can use blade energy to destroy armies of regenerative monsters that ordinary Allied Shinobi Forces attacks could not stop. 640

Ninjutsu

Ruri possesses broad elemental mastery beyond his original Wind and Lightning affinities. 1 74

  • Chibaku Tensei — Sealed Momoshiki using the nine Tailed Beast Balls and other chakra sources. 540

Tailed Beast Power

Ruri gained the Seven-Tails' cooperation and later drew upon chakra from multiple Tailed Beasts. 67 402

  • Seven-Tails Chakra Mode grants flight, durability, and extensive chakra reserves. 40 78
  • Complete Seven-Tails Transformation is suited to large-scale combat and opponents such as Susanoo. 67
  • He can suppress masses of enemies through raw chakra pressure while supplied by the Seven-Tails. 79
  • He extracted and used chakra from the Yang Nine-Tails and four additional Tailed Beasts during the battle with Danzo. 402

Sealing and Illusion Techniques

Ruri frequently uses seals to control dangerous beings, protect strategic assets, and constrain allies or enemies. 39 161

  • Phantom Dragons Nine Consuming Seals — Seals chakra, tailed-beast power, and techniques into hosts; used on Shizuka, Seimei, and the Black Jiao. 39 46 161
  • Bloodline Seal — Made Naota immune to Wind Release. 141
  • Infinite Tsukuyomi — Allows surveillance of Takigakure and can be used to influence or search memories. 58 106 187
  • Box of Ultimate Bliss — Used it to seal Satori, then entered its Blue Stone Palace. 253 255

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nunoboko — A Truth-Seeking Orb transformed into Ruri's primary blade; used for his strongest sword techniques. 123 277
  • Sage Rake — A Truth-Seeking-Orb weapon given to him by Hamura; contains Yin-Yang power and sage-art training knowledge. 257

  • Talisman of the Sage — A talisman connected to Hamura and the stone statues within the Blue Stone Palace. 257

  • Linglong — Daimyo of the Land of Waterfalls whom Ruri and Kakuzu helped install. Her rule and Ruri's Takigakure leadership formed the foundation of the country's development. 18 291
  • Hashirama Senju — Respects Ruri as a fellow advocate of peace despite their clashes; the two ended their confrontation without continuing hostilities. 14
