Background / History

The Celestial Star Sect originated when Hunyuan Ancestor passed teachings to three disciples, who established the Violet Sun, Bright Moon, and Celestial Star Sects. Tianhe Zhenren founded the Celestial Star lineage after observing celestial phenomena and created its foundational framework, described as “Xing Hai Hua Tian Luo, Qiankun Yi Zhang Zhong.” 8

Tianhe was said to have begun as a middle-aged fisherman with little education or martial foundation. He later attained formidable true qi, created the all-encompassing Myriad Phenomena Sky Net, and was regarded as Hunyuan Ancestor’s most brilliant disciple. 9 Under his legacy, the sect became the foremost of the Three Divine Peaks for roughly a century, possessing the renowned “Seven Techniques and Fifteen Swords.” 9

Thirty years before the main story, the sect entered the Battle of Celestial Star Demon Subjugation against the Reincarnation Sect. At the time, it had three Innate experts, including Sect Leader Li Qianshan, who had reached the peak of the fourth Innate realm. 64 Although the sect crippled the Reincarnation Sect, both sides were left devastated; the Great Li imperial family then intervened against the exhausted survivors, turning the campaign into a trap that severely weakened Celestial Star. 64

The court subsequently removed Celestial Star-affiliated generals from office. Feeling betrayed, surviving disciples dispersed across the martial world rather than return to a sect still cooperating with the imperial court. 64 By the present era, the sect had no Innate experts remaining and had fallen behind both the Violet Sun and Bright Moon Sects. 64

The Three Branch Tournament was organized to reunite Gazing Sky Cliff, Gold Jade Hall, and Fierce Tiger Stronghold. Its winner would become Young Sect Leader and receive the Vast Sea Heart Sutra and a Lapis Pill. 74 Lu Wu-bing’s victory and subsequent leadership helped bring the branches together, restore morale, and begin the sect’s revival. 133 154

Organization

Branch / Institution Known Role and Inheritance
Gazing Sky Cliff The Sect Leader’s main lineage. It holds the Vast Ocean Divine Art, Myriad Phenomena Sky Net, Violet Stellar Divine Sword, and the killing swords Seven Killings, Po Jun, and Greedy Wolf. 117
Gold Jade Hall Led by Shen Liancheng. Its core inheritance is the Subduing Dragon Sword, while its wealth and commercial network became crucial to the sect’s recovery. 61 180
Fierce Tiger Stronghold Associated with Li Feiying’s lineage. Its inheritances include the Glass Body, Tiger Soul Heart Method, Shadowless Sword, and Tiger Soul Spear. 117 125
Hall of Clear Mind A former subordinate hall in East Sea Commandery that prospered independently after the main sect weakened. It later reintegrated into the Celestial Star Sect. 163

Disciples

At its historical height, the sect reportedly maintained three thousand disciples, including eight hundred direct disciples, with twenty-eight fifth-generation elders. 112 During its decline, only nine direct disciples remained on Celestial Star Peak. 112

Following the branches’ reunification, Lu Wu-bing trained more than four hundred disciples in body refinement and swordsmanship. The sect then began recruiting widely again, with the goal of restoring its former scale. 157 177

Teachings and Inheritances

Dripping Water Force

The Dripping Water Force is the sect’s introductory internal-energy method and the foundation of Tianhe Zhenren’s lineage. It is described as upright, peaceful, and safe for beginners, with no risk of qi deviation. 7 8

  • Cultivates slowly despite its exceptional offensive force. 7
  • Uses ultimate softness to overcome hardness; its released power can shatter metal and break iron. 7
  • Is considered stronger in offense than the Eastern Sea Sword Sect’s Surging Wave Force. 7

Foundational Swordsmanship

All disciples, whether outer or direct, begin with basic internal cultivation and basic swordsmanship. 10

  • Thirteen Life-Snatching Swords — The sect’s foundational sword art; despite its basic status, it is considered comparable to ultimate arts from smaller sects. 10
  • Inch Step — A lightness technique that circulates internal energy through the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian to improve speed, balance, and mobility. 19
  • Dragon Tendon Tiger Bone Fist — The sect’s foremost external fist technique, noted for its vigorous and fierce body-refining path. 22 119

Advanced and Divine Arts

Technique Description
Seven Stars Swordplay Derived from the Violet Stellar Divine Sword; its sword force is majestic and suppresses all directions. 117
Violet Stellar Divine Sword / North Star Sword Gazing Sky Cliff’s peak divine sword inheritance; Ouyang Zheng uses it with Vast Ocean Divine Art. 117
Vast Ocean Divine Art Gazing Sky Cliff’s highest internal cultivation inheritance. It embodies the sect’s principle of a small stream becoming a vast sea. 117 198
Myriad Phenomena Sky Net The sect’s ultimate divine skill. It can simulate and merge martial arts from different schools, becoming stronger as its user learns more techniques. 145 198
Subduing Dragon Sword Gold Jade Hall’s signature inheritance. It is regarded as one of the sect’s foremost sword arts and is suited to practitioners of varied talent. 61 117
Shadowless Sword A major Fierce Tiger Stronghold inheritance. 43 117
Star Guiding Art A forbidden technique with extraordinary combat potential but severe risks of qi deviation, damaged cultivation, and irreversible bodily harm. 91

Customs and Rules

  • New disciples normally pay respects to the patriarch in the Ancestral Hall before receiving cultivation methods or sword techniques. 7
  • Techniques are ordinarily bestowed only after assessment; this restriction prevented the unrestricted teaching of arts such as Inch Step and the Celestial River Orthodox Method. 14 44
  • The sect’s internal division was aggravated by unequal transmission of inheritances among its lineages. 44
  • Its traditional motto is: “Gathered, we are a ball of fire; scattered, we are like stars in the sky.” 154

Reputation

The Celestial Star Sect is counted among the righteous martial world’s greatest lineages: “One Temple, One Mountain, Three Divine Peaks” refers respectively to the Great Brahma Temple, True Martial Mountain, and the Violet Sun, Bright Moon, and Celestial Star Sects. 3

Ouyang Zheng is known as “Righteousness Reaching the Heavens,” while he and Qin Huaiying are recognized for helping those in distress and strictly disciplining disciples. 3 This reputation endured even during the sect’s decline, though its old prestige also made its inheritances a target for hostile factions. 139

Resources and Revival

The Gazing Sky Cliff lineage was once severely impoverished, with ordinary food, limited medicinal meals, and insufficient resources even for regular meat consumption. 50 87 The reunification of the three branches changed this situation substantially.

  • Gold Jade Hall contributed Shen Liancheng’s wealth, provisions, and commercial resources to the sect. 180
  • Hall of Clear Mind offered Purple Flame Shell resources, including materials used for cultivation medicines. 156 163
  • Lu Wu-bing brought major wealth and medicinal resources from East Sea Prefecture. 180 192
  • Purple Heart Pills and Golden Jade Pills were historically central to the sect’s rapid cultivation and martial strength. 192
  • With its renewed finances, the sect could support several thousand disciples and resume large-scale recruitment. 177 180

Relationships

  • Bright Moon Sect — Sister sect within the Three Divine Peaks; both trace their lineage to Hunyuan Ancestor’s disciples. The Bright Moon Sect later aligned with Celestial Star against the Demonic Sect and Violet Sun Sect. 8 192
  • Violet Sun Sect — Fellow Three Divine Peak sect and former ally. Bi Fenkong sought to unite the three peaks by absorbing Celestial Star and Bright Moon inheritances, making the sect an increasingly open enemy. 127 192 204
  • Great Li imperial family — Once closely tied to Celestial Star through its role in protecting the dynasty, but the imperial family used the Demon Subjugation campaign to weaken the sect and later stripped its affiliated members of power. 64 177
  • Hall of Clear Mind — Former subordinate branch that separated during the main sect’s decline before returning under Lu Wu-bing’s leadership. 163
  • Eastern Sea Sword Sect — A hostile sword sect whose leader Gu Dongting was defeated and maimed by Qin Huaiying’s Seven Kill Starfall. 63
