Background / History

Ouyang Lan is the daughter of Celestial Star Sect leader Ouyang Zheng and Qin Huaiying. Raised on Celestial Star Peak, she learned the sect’s Yaoguang Sword and absorbed extensive martial-world knowledge from her parents, even when her own training was initially less disciplined. She was known for being lively, playful, and fond of leaving the mountain to see the wider world. 3 14 37

Before Lu Wu-bing joined the sect, she attacked the Lu family and injured Lu Changfeng while pursuing the Yuanling Swordplay matter. Soon afterward, however, she supported Lu Wu-bing’s request to become Ouyang Zheng’s disciple, judging him clever and righteous. 3 6

Her experiences traveling with Lu Wu-bing changed her outlook. After narrowly surviving ambushes, poison, and pursuit by the Eastern Sea Sword Sect, she became more cautious and began training seriously. She disregarded sect rules to teach Lu Wu-bing the Inch Step light-body technique so they could escape together. 14 17 18

During their journey through Hengshan, Ouyang Lan and Lu Wu-bing destroyed bandit strongholds, protected villagers, and avenged a Bright Moon Palace disciple killed at Chaoyang Stronghold. The sight of the murdered senior sister deeply affected Ouyang Lan and drove her to cultivate through the night. 28 29

Appearance

Ouyang Lan is commonly associated with goose-yellow clothing and carries a narrow, light long sword suited to her agile style. Her appearance is repeatedly described as graceful and pretty, though her bearing becomes markedly heroic when she fights. 94 102 232

  • Often wears a goose-yellow skirt or robe. 94 102
  • Prefers light, narrow swords over broad or heavy weapons. 127
  • Received and wears a jade hairpin gifted by Yue Lingfeng. 88
  • Her sword presence can become imposing enough to resemble an empress. 195

Personality

Ouyang Lan begins as cheerful, impulsive, trusting, and somewhat naïve about the dangers outside the mountain. She has a strong sense of justice inherited from her parents and refuses to ignore bandits or threats to innocent people. 14 25

She is unusually knowledgeable about martial artists, sects, weapons, and signature techniques, largely because she grew up hearing stories and information from her family. This knowledge frequently helps Lu Wu-bing identify enemies and understand their fighting styles. 37 146 149

Although initially less diligent than her fellow disciples, Ouyang Lan becomes intensely motivated by danger, grief, and Lu Wu-bing’s example. Her best growth comes through practical sparring and intuitive realization rather than rigid instruction. 29 122 152

Her bond with Lu Wu-bing gradually becomes openly affectionate. She is protective of him, worries about falling behind him, and becomes jealous of other women around him, while still wanting to fight at his side rather than remain a burden. 158 207
