Appearance
Ouyang Zheng first appears as a composed Taoist martial artist whose gentle bearing conceals formidable power. He wears a feathered crown and blue Taoist robes, with five long strands of beard beneath his chin. 5
- Gentle, difficult-to-read gaze. 5
- Clear, weathered face and a refined scholarly demeanor. 192
- Usually carries a long sword. 104
- His movement technique is subtle enough to make his arrival nearly imperceptible. 5
Personality
Ouyang Zheng is widely regarded as a righteous and compassionate elder. He places the safety of civilians and the Celestial Star Sect above personal gain, and will intervene even when doing so offers no benefit. 6 144 He takes genuine satisfaction in helping others and considers the people he has saved one of the meaningful accomplishments of his life. 144
As sect leader, he is protective of promising disciples and willing to invest heavily in their growth. He is also strict when discipline is necessary, punishing Yue Lingfeng for disobedience despite their long-standing bond. 133 153 194 Although proud of his cultivation, he can acknowledge his limitations, accept guidance from Lu Wu-bing, and reassess his own assumptions. 127 192
Abilities & Skills
Vast Ocean Divine Art
Ouyang Zheng's primary internal art grants him internal energy described as vast as the sea.
- His acquired internal energy was already capable of contending with Innate true qi before his breakthrough. 127
- After opening the mystic gate, he converted his internal energy into Vast Ocean True Qi, greatly improving his attack and defense. 127 144
- He could hold his own against the Green Snake King, whose sonic and poison techniques were dangerous even to high-level Innate experts. 191 204
- His true qi can manifest as surging currents capable of dispersing blood mist and breaking enemy techniques. 12
Celestial Star Swordsmanship
Ouyang Zheng is a high-level swordsman proficient in the Celestial Star Sect's signature arts.
- Yaoguang Sword / Po Jun Sword — Creates dozens or hundreds of starlike sword lights that overwhelm an opponent's defenses. 104
- Purple Star Celestial Sword — His sword shines like the North Star and releases broad, crushing sword qi over a wide area. 144
- Violet Stellar Divine Sword Intent — His Innate sword intent strengthens his perception and enables him to detect otherwise hidden qualities in an opponent's cultivation. 148 192
- His swordsmanship is precise as well as powerful; Lu Wu-bing describes it as shifting freely between broad, ink-splashing force and fine brushwork. 104
Lightness Skill
Ouyang Zheng's footwork is among his strongest attributes.
- His perfected Inch Step can achieve an effect comparable to Ground Shrinking Step, crossing dozens of feet almost instantaneously. 103
- His speed allowed him to ambush the Innate expert Old Devil Lianhua. 103
- He is considered top-tier in lightness skill, internal energy, and swordsmanship, with sword intent once being his principal shortcoming. 103
Primal Spirit Swordplay
Ouyang Zheng secretly practiced the dangerous Primal Spirit Swordplay Manual after encountering it through Lu Wu-bing.
- The swordplay can rapidly improve cultivation and assist in breaking into the Innate Realm. 107
- Its use brings severe risks: demonic thoughts, unstable emotions, killing intent, and the temptation to absorb enemies' spirits. 107 169 202
- He spends substantial time suppressing its backlash rather than indulging in its power. 107
- Lu Wu-bing gives him the Small Clear Sound Mantra, Purple Heart Pills, the Azure Sky Chant, and other means to calm or counter the manual's harmful influence. 107 202
Relationships
- Lu Wu-bing — Disciple and eventual true successor. Ouyang Zheng initially accepts him reluctantly after being presented with the Yuanling Swordplay Manual, then grows deeply proud of his talent and entrusts him with the Han Hai Sword and sect inheritance. 5 6 104 127 133
- Ouyang Lan — Daughter. He is protective of her safety, though he also recognizes her growing independence and martial potential. 6 14 158
- Qin Huaiying — Wife, fellow sect leader, and trusted partner. They jointly protect the sect, confront traitors, and support Lu Wu-bing's rise. 103 127 205
- Yue Lingfeng — Eldest disciple, raised almost as a son alongside Ouyang Lan. Ouyang Zheng carved wooden swords for him as a child, but later disciplines him harshly for his misconduct. 124 194
- Li Feiying — Junior brother and leader of the Fierce Tiger Stronghold branch. Their relationship is strained by Li Feiying's political maneuvering and contacts with the Violet Sun Sect. 40 144
- Wu Yunchong — Third disciple. Ouyang Zheng includes him in the mission to rescue Bright Moon Palace's Aunt Guanghan and relies on him as part of the sect's younger generation. 12 13
Story Role / Major Arcs
Lu Family Crisis
Lu Wu-bing approaches Ouyang Zheng with the Yuanling Swordplay Manual, seeking both protection and a way to prevent the manual from spreading disaster across the martial world. Ouyang Zheng immediately recognizes the manual's sinister nature and refuses Lu Wu-bing's proposal to distribute it as revenge against the Eastern Sea Sword Sect. 5
Though concerned that Lu Wu-bing began martial training too late and would bring the sect into conflict with the Eastern Sea Sword Sect, Ouyang Zheng ultimately accepts him as a disciple. 6 He personally begins Lu Wu-bing's cultivation by teaching him the Dripping Water Force, the foundational internal art of the Celestial Star lineage. 8
Protecting His Disciples
Ouyang Zheng leads Lu Wu-bing, Ouyang Lan, and Wu Yunchong on a northern mission to rescue a Bright Moon Palace ally. He easily defeats a Blood Lotus Sect attacker and repeatedly prioritizes his disciples' safety during the journey. 12 13 14
During the later conflict with Old Devil Lianhua, he fights beside Qin Huaiying while Lu Wu-bing races back to find the missing Ouyang Lan. 100
Recognition of Lu Wu-bing
After former Celestial Star Sect disciples attack the mountain, Ouyang Zheng tests Lu Wu-bing directly with the Yaoguang Sword. Lu Wu-bing's White Rainbow Pierces the Sun convinces him that his disciple's power is genuine rather than merely derived from the Yuanling manual. 103 104
He thereafter accepts Lu Wu-bing as a true successor, gives him cultivation resources, advises him to conceal his perfected swordsmanship, and accepts Lu Wu-bing's assistance in managing the dangers of Primal Spirit Swordplay. 104 106 107
Innate Breakthrough and Sect Succession
Lu Wu-bing's explanation of forging one sword through observing myriad swords helps Ouyang Zheng overcome his long-standing bottleneck and enter the Innate Realm. 127 In recognition of Lu Wu-bing's potential and reliability, he gives him the Han Hai Sword. 127
Following Lu Wu-bing's victory in the Three Branch Tournament, Ouyang Zheng presents him with the Vast Ocean Divine Art's True Meaning Pearl and openly acknowledges that his disciple may surpass him. 133
Defense of the Celestial Star Sect
When Li Feiying and Yu Qingshan are attacked at Fierce Tiger Stronghold's camp, Ouyang Zheng arrives to save them, only to discover that Lu Wu-bing had arranged the confrontation to test and redirect them. Their ensuing three-sword exchange helps Ouyang Zheng comprehend the Purple Star Celestial Sword's intent. 144
He later fights the Green Snake King despite being weakened by poison, until Lu Wu-bing arrives and changes the battle's outcome. 191 192 As the sect's influence expands, Ouyang Zheng supports Lu Wu-bing's defensive strategy and accepts the need to delegate authority to the younger generation. 194 205
