Background / History

Yue Lingfeng was a scrawny beggar when he was taken into the Celestial Star Sect at age five. Ouyang Zheng and Qin Huaiying raised him for eighteen years with the care they gave their own family: Qin Huaiying bought him clothes and toys, while Ouyang Zheng carved wooden swords for him. His exceptional talent and diligence made him the couple’s greatest hope for restoring the sect’s former glory. 124

By the time Lu Wu-bing joined the sect, Yue was its celebrated eldest disciple. His swordsmanship helped Gazing Sky Cliff maintain its advantage over the Gold Jade Hall and Fierce Tiger Stronghold lineages, and even outside sects considered him a rare sword prodigy. 43

He initially welcomed Lu as a junior who could benefit from his guidance, but Lu’s rapid growth overturned the established hierarchy. Yue’s anxiety became increasingly apparent after Lu passed four Ancestor Cave trials, defeated him in the Three Branch Tournament, and became Young Sect Leader. 113 118 133

Personality

Yue Lingfeng is naturally confident, carefree, and accustomed to being praised as the most outstanding disciple on the mountain. This confidence can become pride: he found it deeply difficult to accept Lu Wu-bing’s rise, particularly when the disciples began treating Lu as his superior. 118

Despite his jealousy and competitiveness, Yue is not wholly malicious. He congratulates Lu even when humiliated, accepts his tournament defeat publicly, and later acknowledges that Lu’s swordsmanship surpasses his own. 118 133 154

He is chivalrous and willing to act for strangers in danger, but this quality is often undermined by impulsiveness. He readily intervened to save Huo Qinghua’s caravan, then agreed to help rescue her mother despite failing to recognize the danger surrounding her identity and objectives. 196
