Background / History

Hyuga Qinglan is a reincarnated individual who recalls having lived three lives. In his prior transmigration, he belonged to the Otsutsuki Main Family on the moon and witnessed the war in which the lunar Branch Family overthrew the Main Family; he ultimately died because of a decisive move by the Branch Family. 2 47

In his current life, Qinglan was orphaned young, branded with the Caged Bird seal, and relegated to the Hyuga Branch Family. He guarded the clan gates, received limited resources, and served as Hyuga Yumi’s guard and sparring partner while seeking a way to remove the seal. 2 23

Before entering the ninja world, Qinglan compiled a scroll from lunar records and deliberate fabrications. He gave it to Hyuga Hiashi as supposed battlefield evidence, knowing its claims about the Byakugan’s evolution would draw the Hyuga Clan toward the Tenseigan. 3 4 He subsequently used the scroll and selective truths to cultivate Orochimaru as an ally while encouraging mutual suspicion between Danzō and the Hyuga Clan. 8 10 35

After reawakening his Otsutsuki chakra, Qinglan activated a hidden Otsutsuki puppet and established a temporary connection to the Giant Tenseigan on the moon. This led to the first manifestation of his Tenseigan. 18 19 He later controlled Mukai Hyuga through a Spirit Orb, turned Root’s intended informant into his own agent, and staged events around the Hyuga Great Elder’s death to deepen the clan’s internal crisis. 25 26 35

Qinglan eventually revived four former Otsutsuki Main Family members through Impure World Reincarnation, naming them the Rainbow Squad. With their chakra, he seized power from the Giant Tenseigan and entered Tenseigan Chakra Mode on the Rock Battlefield. 45 46 48

Appearance

Qinglan is a handsome, black-haired youth with waist-length hair, usually tied into a neat ponytail. He normally presents as a restrained Hyuga Branch Family shinobi, concealing the abnormal power behind his Byakugan. 2 8

Qinglan is patient, composed, and highly deceptive. He endures the Branch Family’s oppression outwardly while carefully constructing a reputation as a dutiful, humble, loyal shinobi. His calm demeanor remains intact even when threatened by Orochimaru, interrogated by Hyuga elders, or targeted by Danzō. 2 8 21 26

Beneath that restraint, he is calculating and long-sighted. He manipulates information, plays the Hyuga Clan and Root against one another, and deliberately adopts separate identities so he can operate beyond the limits of being a Konoha shinobi. 4 18 35 His primary goal is to become a true Otsutsuki and attain a complete Tenseigan rather than merely rely on reincarnated chakra. 9 23

Despite considering the use of Hyuga Byakugan to advance his Tenseigan, Qinglan explicitly rejects slaughtering the entire clan. He instead considers acquiring the eyes of awakened Hyuga as a more acceptable route. 23
