Background

The Byakugan is one of the two Kekkei Genkai traced to Otsutsuki Kaguya, alongside the Sharingan. The Hyuga, described as descendants of Otsutsuki Hamura, lack the extensive cultivation methods attributed to Hagoromo's descendants; improving their ocular power therefore demands costly and sustained training. 2

The Hyuga Clan treats every recovered Byakugan as a strategic resource. Main Family eyes are removed after death and stored in the secret vault for possible transplantation. A Branch Family member killed on a battlefield has their eyes automatically destroyed by the Caged Bird seal; if they die within the clan, their eyes may instead be stored for medical use. 7

A scroll delivered by Hyuga Qinglan reveals that the Byakugan can evolve beyond its ordinary state into the Tenseigan, which Orochimaru describes as comparable to the Rinnegan. The prospect drives Hyuga Hiashi and the Hyuga elders to pursue the secret obsessively. 3 8 23

On the moon, the Otsutsuki Clan repairs the Giant Tenseigan while awaiting a child of the purest bloodline to inherit it. Their stated objective is to reclaim the Hyuga Clan's Byakugan and use the Giant Tenseigan's power to destroy the ninja world. 18
