Background / History

A scroll delivered to Hyuga Hiashi by Hyuga Qinglan records the Hyuga as descendants of Otsutsuki Hamura and claims that the Byakugan can evolve further into the Tenseigan. Hiashi considers parts of its contents consistent with fragmented Main Branch archives, making the scroll a source of both hope and obsession within the clan. 3 10

The clan maintains a secret vault containing historical texts, inherited weapons, records of the Eight Trigrams Palm, and preserved Byakugan. Its handling of stored eyes reflects the division between the Main and Branch Families. 7

The clan enters a crisis after Main Family elder Hyuga Tianyun is killed and a pair of Branch Family Byakugan, along with Qinglan's scroll, are stolen from the vault. The incident deepens internal suspicion and prompts Konoha to impose martial law. 5 6

Later, a black-robed intruder associated with the name “Qing” devastates the Hyuga compound, kills three high-ranking Main Branch members, injures multiple Branch Family guards, and kills the Great Elder. The official explanation is that the intruder came to reclaim something the clan had stolen. 27 29 31

Conflict with Konoha Leadership

Hiruzen places Konoha under martial law after the theft and criticizes the clan for placing clan concerns above the village's wartime needs. Danzō later interprets the clan's covert dispatch of a four-person squad—two jōnin and two chūnin—to the Iwagakure war zone as possible preparation for defection. 6 21

Assault on the Hyuga Compound

The Great Elder confronts Qinglan over the Tenseigan before an unknown attacker strikes the compound. The subsequent assault destroys part of the estate, defeats its elders, and leaves the clan vulnerable to intensified scrutiny from Danzō and Konoha's leadership. 26 27 29

Iwagakure War Crisis

As Konoha's position deteriorates, the clan initially considers evacuating Main Branch members and secretly cultivated shinobi while the Branch Family remains at the front.
