Background

Sun Wukong trained under Patriarch Bodhi at Square Inch Mountain, where he cultivated from a celestial-stone-born monkey into a Great Luo Golden Immortal in three months. Bodhi later expelled him because Wukong's close connection to the Heavenly Dao risked exposing and destroying the mountain's master. 65 67

After settling on Flower Fruit Mountain, Wukong became the Great King of its monkeys. Su Yu, Bodhi's first disciple, visited him after the expulsion and proved his identity with Bodhi's token. Wukong immediately recognized Su Yu as his senior brother and offered to join him against the Heavenly Court and Tathagata. 67

Personality

Sun Wukong is proud, impulsive, and confrontational. He readily accepted the Heavenly Court's enlistment, only to rebel after being assigned the lowly post of Keeper of the Heavenly Horses; he then proclaimed himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. 68 69

He is fiercely loyal to his senior brother, his monkey subjects, and those he regards as family. He trusted Su Yu's decision not to rescue him from the pill furnace, accepted harsh cultivation to avenge himself, and ultimately chose to leave Flower Fruit Mountain to travel with Su Yu. 72 75 80

Despite his aggression, Wukong displays humor and straightforwardness. He mocked Nezha's Three Heads Six Arms technique by asking to learn it so that “one of me will be as good as three” when drinking with Su Yu. 71

Abilities & Skills

Great Luo Immortal Physique

Sun Wukong's celestial-stone origin gives him exceptional physical strength, resilience, and the capacity to fight stronger opponents.

  • Defeated Nezha—another Great Luo Golden Immortal—despite Nezha using Three Heads Six Arms and several magical treasures. 71
  • Withstood blades, lightning, fire, and Taishang Laojun's Samadhi True Fire without dying. 71
  • The pill furnace refined the power of stolen immortal pills within him and enabled his breakthrough to Taiyi Heavenly Immortal. 72

As-You-Wish Golden Cudgel

Wukong's primary weapon is the As-You-Wish Golden Cudgel, acquired from the East Sea.

  • Can be enlarged to devastating size; he used it to smash Spirit Mountain's palaces. 68 79
  • Overpowered Six-Eared Macaque's imitation Golden Cudgel with a single exchange. 79
  • Was used to kill Tathagata after the destruction of Spirit Mountain. 80

Somersault Cloud

Wukong uses the Somersault Cloud for rapid aerial movement.

  • Took Su Yu on a tour of Flower Fruit Mountain using the cloud. 67
  • Accepted Tathagata's wager believing the cloud could carry him beyond Tathagata's palm, but was deceived by the expanding palm technique. 73

Clone Technique

Wukong can create large numbers of duplicates in battle.

  • Produced hundreds or thousands of clones during the assault on the Southern Heavenly Gate. 72

Fiery Eyes and Golden Gaze

Wukong developed golden eyes after enduring the pill furnace.

  • The furnace ordeal awakened his Fiery Eyes of Truth. 72
  • His eyes emit golden light after his later breakthrough, though he can deactivate them. 78

Divine Sense

Wukong can leave a portion of his divine sense behind to protect Flower Fruit Mountain.

  • Placed a wisp of divine sense within a grass-and-wood giant made in his likeness, creating a guardian for the mountain in his absence. 70

Equipment

  • As-You-Wish Golden Cudgel — Wukong's shape-changing staff and principal weapon. 68
  • Phoenix-Winged Purple Gold Crown — East Sea treasure taken by Wukong. 68
  • Chainmail Golden Armor — East Sea treasure taken by Wukong. 68
  • Lotus Root Silk Cloud Walking Boots — East Sea treasure taken by Wukong. 68

Relationships

  • Su Yu — Senior brother under Patriarch Bodhi. Wukong immediately allied with him against the Heavenly Court, trusted his plans, and later chose to accompany him beyond their world. 67 72 80
  • Patriarch Bodhi — Master who taught Wukong before expelling him to avoid the Heavenly Dao discovering their connection. 65
  • Flower Fruit Mountain monkeys — His disciples, grandchildren, and subjects. They remained devoted to him during his five-hundred-year absence and created a giant in his image to guard the mountain. 70 73
  • Tathagata — Principal enemy who deceived and imprisoned Wukong under Five Finger Mountain. Wukong later killed him during the assault on Spirit Mountain. 73 80
  • Six-Eared Macaque — Impostor who replaced Wukong and became Spirit Mountain's false Victorious Fighting Buddha. Wukong exposed and defeated him. 75 79
  • Aolai Country Third Master — A counterpart from another world. The two initially questioned each other's identity, then worked together against the Beyond the Heavens Heavenly Court. 111
  • Taibai Jinxing — Heavenly Court envoy who recruited Wukong and later announced his appointment as Great Sage Equal to Heaven. 68 71

Story Role / Major Arcs

Flower Fruit Mountain

Su Yu arrived at Flower Fruit Mountain before Wukong's return, gave Beast Spirit Pills to the monkeys so they could speak and cultivate, and was accepted as the mountain's Second King. Wukong returned from the East Sea, met Su Yu, and brought him into the Water Curtain Cave—a small world whose world heart is Wukong's stone chair. 67

When Wukong returned from the Heavenly Court after rejecting the Keeper of the Heavenly Horses post, he proclaimed himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. Su Yu had spent the intervening thirty years training the monkeys, who had established a sect-like hierarchy under Wukong's rule. 69

Conflict with the Heavenly Court

Li Jing's army arrived to arrest Wukong for rebellion. Wukong faced the force alone, defeated Nezha, and was subsequently offered the official title of Great Sage Equal to Heaven and stewardship of the Peach Orchard. 70 71

After stealing peaches and immortal pills, disrupting the Peach Banquet, and escaping captivity, Wukong was placed in Taishang Laojun's pill furnace. The furnace failed to kill him, instead giving him a breakthrough and Fiery Eyes of Truth. 71 72

Wukong and Su Yu then attacked the Heavenly Palace together, using clones to overwhelm the Southern Heavenly Gate and challenging both the Jade Emperor and Tathagata. 72

Five Finger Mountain and the Pilgrimage

Tathagata deceived Wukong with a wager over escaping his palm, then suppressed him beneath Five Finger Mountain for five hundred years. Wukong was eventually released by Tang Sanzang and joined the pilgrimage for scriptures. 73

After the pilgrimage, Wukong was killed and replaced by Six-Eared Macaque. Su Yu discovered the truth, rescued him, and established a time-slowing formation in the Water Curtain Cave so Wukong could prepare for revenge. 75

Destruction of Spirit Mountain

Wukong cultivated for 2,000 years within the time formation and achieved another breakthrough. When his mana became unstable, Su Yu used the Origin Nurturing Heart Calming Melody to stabilize him. 78

At Spirit Mountain, Wukong exposed Six-Eared Macaque as an impostor, defeated him with one strike, and destroyed much of Spirit Mountain with the Golden Cudgel. He ultimately killed Tathagata, while Su Yu seized the Relic needed for Tathagata's resurrection. 79 80

Travels Beyond His Native World

With Flower Fruit Mountain protected by the divine-sense guardians left behind by himself and Su Yu, Wukong said farewell to his monkeys and entered Su Yu's Dominator Space. 80 81

Su Yu later summoned him to the Circle Within world, where Wukong aided Aolai Country Third Master against the Beyond the Heavens Heavenly Court. He destroyed that Heavenly Court with his staff, allowing the Third Master to kill its Jade Emperor. 111
