Background / History

Kurama was forcibly split and sealed inside Naruto Uzumaki by Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki. The sealing left it resentful toward humans, Minato, and Kushina in particular. It later confessed its involvement in the events surrounding Naruto's parents' deaths, while identifying the Masked Man as a key cause of the Nine-Tails Incident 29 30.

When Naruto first entered the Sealing Space, Kurama attempted to intimidate him, lure him closer, and tempt him with power. Naruto refused both its threats and its encouragement to take violent revenge on Konoha's villagers 11 12. Naruto continued visiting nightly despite Kurama's hostility, gradually turning the sealed beast into a listener and eventual companion 12 13.

After Naruto awakened the golden Rinnegan and addressed Kurama by its true name, Kurama briefly believed Naruto to be the reincarnation of the Sage of Six Paths. Naruto disproved this assumption by beating it with Shinra Tensei and Banshō Ten'in, though Kurama remained suspicious of the Rinnegan's origin 14 15.

Over time, Kurama accepted Naruto, Shadow, and the Raiden Shogun as friends through their shared mahjong games in the Sealing Space. The group treated it as an equal rather than fearing or coveting its power 19 20.

Despite its hostility, Kurama is responsive to sincerity. Naruto's repeated visits, refusal to blame it for Konoha's prejudice, and insistence on friendship gradually earn its trust 12 13. Once accepted into Naruto's circle, Kurama becomes protective of Naruto and worries about his safety, even discouraging him from becoming a rogue ninja or risking death to fully free it 28 77.
