Background

Kakashi was Minato Namikaze’s student. After Minato and Kushina died in the Nine-Tails Incident, Kakashi withdrew into grueling Anbu work and deliberately avoided Naruto, failing Minato’s expectation that he look after his son. He later admits this failure directly to Minato and carries lasting guilt over it. 47

Following Obito’s attack on Naruto, Kakashi returns to Naruto’s protection detail. His Sharingan makes him a difficult target for Naruto’s Genjutsu, which prevents Naruto from simply hypnotizing all of the Anbu guards. 51

His central motivation is guilt. Kakashi regrets abandoning Naruto after Minato’s death, recognizes that Konoha’s treatment of Naruto helped shape his resentment, and repeatedly tries to persuade Naruto to remain with the village. 47 58 69 83 He worries that Naruto could follow a destructive path like Obito and seeks information from Fu Hua when Naruto’s attachment to Konoha appears unchanged. 83

Kakashi arrives during Obito’s attack on Naruto and recognizes Minato, who is possessing Naruto’s body. He apologizes for failing to protect Naruto after the Nine-Tails Incident. 47

Team 7 Formation and Survival Exercise

Kakashi becomes the jonin instructor of Team 7, composed of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. He administers a two-bell survival exercise, but Naruto and Sasuke’s coordinated assault overwhelms him and puts him in the hospital. 56 58

Although humiliated by the result, Kakashi passes Naruto and Sasuke for their teamwork and accepts Sakura’s participation in the victory as grounds to pass her as well. 58

Team 7 Training

Driven partly by guilt toward Minato, Kakashi agrees to teach Naruto extensively. Naruto’s ability to master techniques immediately leaves Kakashi overwhelmed, while Sasuke receives Chidori and Sakura receives Water Style training. 60

Land of Waves Mission

Kakashi leads Team 7 on Tazuna’s escort mission. He allows Naruto and Sasuke to confront the Demon Brothers, protects Tazuna during Haku’s attack, and watches Naruto defeat Zabuza. 61 63
