Background

The Bai Family was one of Bamboo Forest Valley’s two longstanding hegemonic clans alongside the Dong Family. It had dominated the region for centuries, possessed extensive influence in the Five Elements Sect, and was said to control an entire prefecture outside the valley. 86 87 136

Its power rested on martial strength, commercial holdings, and entrenched infrastructure. The family operated shops in the Bamboo Forest Black Market, backed the Bamboo Forest Auction, held shares in local trade, and owned herb fields, mines, and salt and iron industries. 82 83 116

The Bai Family Old Mansion was heavily guarded, with ordinary patrol guards at least at the Skin Phase, a Five Viscera Phase guard captain, and multiple secret treasuries protected by separate personnel. 87 96

Military Strength

• Bai Jingtian, the family ancestor, was a Six Bowels Phase Martial General at perfection and served as the clan’s principal deterrent. 88 92

Conflict with Qin Dongcheng

Bai Song’s Disappearance

At the Bamboo Forest Auction, Bai Song repeatedly competed with the disguised Qin Dongcheng, known publicly as Yanzu, over Strange Treasures. He used the Bai Family’s status and wealth to outbid him, openly threatened him, and later dispatched men to track and kill him. 83 84 85

Bai Song and his escort were instead killed by Qin Dongcheng. Their disappearance cost the Bai Family several hundred thousand taels of silver, its designated heir, and a number of high-level guards. 86

Investigation and Retaliation

The Bai Family responded by mobilizing thousands of people, involving allied families and the Five Elements Sect, closing the Bamboo Forest Black Market, and surveilling intermediate alchemists—including Qin Dongcheng. 86

Qin Dongcheng infiltrated the Bai Family Old Mansion, stole the Tiger Demon Nine Claws, the Five Elements Marrow Cleansing Fist, one hundred thousand taels in silver notes, and medicinal pills. He then set the mansion ablaze, leaving it uninhabitable after a fire that lasted all night. 87 88

A second infiltration resulted in the deaths of the guards of the Third Secret Treasury, the loss of treasure worth over one million taels, and another fire that destroyed temporary residences for the family’s upper ranks. 96

False Accusations Against the Dong Family

After Bai Song’s weapon resurfaced in the Bamboo Forest Black Market, the Bai Family sealed the market again and concluded that the Dong Family was responsible for Bai Song’s death and the attacks on the clan. 113

The family ordered investigations into Dong Family associates and discussed manufacturing evidence if necessary. Qin Dongcheng became a target because of his relationship with Dong Hongyan and Dong Hongyu. 113 115

Downfall

After Bai Teng’s investigation exposed the Bai Family’s plans against the Dong Family, Qin Dongcheng launched a direct assault on the family’s leadership. He killed the high-ranking members gathered in the temporary guest hall, then forced Bai Lanbi to disclose the locations of the remaining secret vaults. 114 115

Qin Dongcheng killed Bai Lanbi and the Bai Family’s Martial Artists at the Flesh Phase Realm or above, while sparing some younger members and noncombatants. 115

The family’s secret vaults yielded Qin Dongcheng more than five million taels in silver-equivalent resources, including top-tier pills, weapons, treasures, and Strange Treasure items. His total gains from the Bai Family approached ten million taels. 116

Following the destruction of its leadership, the Bai Family ceased to be a power in Bamboo Forest Valley. The Five Elements Sect absorbed its territory, and the Bamboo Forest Black Market reopened. 116

Many later attributed the Bai Family’s destruction to the Five Elements Hidden Ancestor’s judgment against its long record of extortion and wrongdoing. The family’s fall became a warning to the Dong Family, which began disciplining members who had committed serious offenses out of fear of meeting the same fate. 150
