Motoko is Tsuruko Aoyama's younger sister, a Shinmeiryu swordswoman, and the companion of the familiar Gale. Tsuruko recognizes Motoko's potential as surpassing her own, but subjects her to exceptionally severe training whenever she loses focus or fails to improve. 154 370 371

After Tsuruko could no longer inherit Shinmeiryu, the responsibility of succession fell to Motoko. Constant comparison to Tsuruko's exceptional talent and the pressure of the school’s expectations eventually overwhelmed her; she fled Kyoto for Tokyo rather than confront the burden directly. 397
