Background

The Netherworld Sect rose to become one of Zhao Kingdom’s Three Great Sects by exploiting the dense Yin energy of the Netherwater River. Its mountain gate drew off that energy through formations to sustain its disciples’ cultivation. The sect’s Ghost Path and Corpse Refining inheritances gave it the character of an Evil Cultivator sect. 27 232

After the Zhao Clan’s fall, the sect controlled Qingli, Heyang, Guangyuan, and Ming Shui Commanderies. It treated surviving old Zhao-aligned families differently according to perceived danger: families closely tied to the Zhao Clan or responsible for serious sect casualties could be exterminated, while others were conciliated and gradually absorbed. 26 248

The Wang Family became an affiliated family but endured three centuries of suppression by the sect’s direct-lineage families. Yang Yong’s protection within the sect was a key reason the family survived. 9 16

Organization

Leadership

The sect’s founding figure, Netherworld True Person, left no descendants. After his Nirvana, control passed to the descendants of his four disciples: the Luo, Zhong, Gu, and Ming families. Sect Masters and Supreme Elders traditionally came from these four Native Faction families. 516

Control of Affiliated Families

The sect exerted authority over affiliated families through rewards, restrictions, and compulsory service. After the Wang Family offered the Clear River Carp, Elder Zhou granted them a shop but required them to breed the fish for the sect, which would claim eighty percent of future offspring. 17

During the Returning Goose Valley operation, the sect mobilized five thousand cultivators: three thousand from affiliated forces, one thousand hired rogue cultivators, and one thousand sect cultivators, supported by three Violet Mansion elders. 24

Its leadership also used old-family forces as expendable assets. During the Cart Gorge battle, some elders deliberately allowed old-family teams to bear greater pressure in an attempt to weaken them. 39 53

Conflict with the Other Great Sects

The Myriad Spirit Sect and Crimson Sun Palace lured Netherworld Sect forces into a major ambush by driving Demonic Beasts against its trade routes. The resulting conflict included attacks on the sect’s mountain-gate formation, spirit fields, and spirit beast park. 49 51

The sect later coerced affiliated families into duels against the Crimson Sun Palace, seeking combatants who could counter lightning-attribute opponents. Wang Daoyuan’s victories helped it secure two-thirds of the contested Spirit Stone mine. 250 261

Yin-Energy Crisis

When the Netherwater River’s Yin energy began disappearing, the sect faced an existential threat. Its higher-ups kept the crisis secret, relying temporarily on stored reserves while seeking a replacement source. 243

Wang Daoyuan gave the sect Ink Jade Nether Lotus seeds to provide hope of restoring its Yin-energy supply, partly to prevent it from taking desperate actions that could destabilize Zhao Kingdom. 249

By the time the sect reduced its northern activities, the Netherwater River’s Yin energy had recovered, easing immediate pressure on its mountain gate. 274

Flying Warship Program

The sect urgently assembled refiners and formation masters—including Wang Daoyuan—to construct twenty Flying Warships. Though initially suspicious of the scale of the project, Wang Daoyuan later learned that most were intended for sale to the Myriad Spirit Sect, which faced attack from the unified Song Kingdom. 319 324

The program demonstrated both the sect’s artifact-refining capacity and its need to convert military resources into political leverage. 320 324

Wang Daoyuan’s Enfeoffment

After Wang Daoyuan formed his Golden Core, Luo Jiuyou offered him two paths: have the entire Wang Family join the sect so he could become Deputy Sect Master, or become a Supreme Elder while the family remained independent. Wang Daoyuan chose to preserve his family’s autonomy. 514

He was subsequently enfeoffed as the sixth Supreme Elder and Governor of Yannan Commandery. The appointment elevated him formally but did not resolve the Native Faction’s distrust of the Wang Family. 515 516

Collapse and Surrender

As Wang Daoyuan aligned with the Zhao Clan, subordinate families rapidly severed their ties with the Netherworld Sect. The simultaneous loss of the Netherwater River’s Yin energy caused panic among lower-level disciples and intensified internal unrest. 614

Luo Jiuyou offered Wang Daoyuan the Sect Master position and control of Qingli and Heyang Commanderies if he restored the river’s Yin energy, but Wang Daoyuan refused. 614

Following the fall of the Nine Nether Profound Crystal Mine and the deaths of Luo Jiuyou and Luo Jiuyu, Zhong Zhenyang killed the last Luo-family Golden Core cultivator. The Zhong, Gu, and Ming families then surrendered the sect, its treasury, defensive formations, disciples, affiliated families, and inheritance records to Emperor Zhao’s forces. 621 622
