Background / History

Guilliman was adopted by Konor, the planetary governor of Macragge, and grew up with both adoptive parents. Konor’s commitment to public welfare and meritocratic reform shaped Guilliman’s political ideals. His upbringing and family life helped him resist Chaos corruption despite repeated wounds from Chaos-tainted weapons. 54

During the Horus Heresy era, Guilliman was wounded by Kor Phaeron and later stabbed in the same location by Fulgrim. The betrayal at Calth devastated the Ultramarines, Imperial Army, and civilians of the system, establishing Guilliman’s enduring enmity toward the Word Bearers and Chaos. 8

After his resurrection on Macragge, a foreign soul merges with the gap in his wounded soul, creating a “new Guilliman.” He awakens in Resurrection Armor with the Emperor’s Sword, immediately becoming a rallying symbol for Imperial defenders. 2 99

Appearance

Guilliman is an immense Primarch whose presence is repeatedly described as divine or demigod-like. He commonly appears in azure or blue power armor, later wearing ceremonial armor and the Crown of Kings.

  • Carries the flaming Emperor’s Sword. 2 6
  • Wields the Hand of Dominion gauntlet. 21
  • His armor and stature intimidate even hardened Imperial personnel. 18
  • Has a noble, flawless face and exceptional physical stature. 456

Personality

Guilliman is pragmatic, calculating, and intensely focused on humanity’s survival. He prefers to stabilize supply lines, industry, administration, and territory before committing to larger wars, treating Ultramar as the foundation from which the Imperium can recover. 9 58

He is also ruthless toward opponents of his reforms. Guilliman regards political loyalty as insufficient unless it includes obedience to his program; nobles, merchants, and officers who resist face arrests, purges, or execution. 45 49 65

His certainty in his own judgment often manifests as arrogance. He dismisses Fulgrim’s corruption attempts, taunts imprisoned traitor Primarchs, and openly pursues ambitions extending beyond the Milky Way and into other universes. 130 272 338

Despite this, Guilliman shows consideration for loyal subordinates, such as Guidos and Calgar, and insists that soldiers receive better logistical support, survivability research, education, and recognition than under the old Imperium. 15 110 152
