Ch. 61Boarding Action
Chapter Summary: “Boarding Action”
Plot Points and Events
- The Imperium launches an expedition into the Charadon Sector following the emergence of the Great Rift, which has intensified Warp activity, chaos, and warfare throughout the galaxy.
- The first major engagement occurs in the Opo System, a hazardous binary-star system containing four resource-rich planets and extensive Imperial mining settlements.
- Orks attack the system to plunder its resources, as they have done repeatedly in the past. However, this time they encounter the Imperial expeditionary fleet led by forces connected to the Primarch’s campaign.
- A brutal space battle develops near the third gas giant. Imperial and Ork warships exchange lasers, torpedoes, nuclear weapons, and close-range attacks.
- The Orks attempt boarding actions using crude jump packs, while Primaris Space Marines repel and kill the attackers.
- An Ork warship is crippled and destroyed after explosions tear through its armory, killing its crew. The Ork Warboss reacts by smashing a Gretchin and ordering an even more aggressive counterattack.
- Despite the Orks’ reckless assault, the Imperial fleet begins to gain the advantage.
- Meanwhile, Ork forces have landed on Opo II, where Astra Militarum troops and Primaris Marines are struggling to contain them.
- Chapter Master Corvu of the Nova Marines determines that the fleet must end the space battle quickly so it can reinforce the ground war before the Orks spread across the planet.
- Corvu proposes boarding the largest Ork vessel and killing its Warboss as the fastest way to break the enemy fleet.
Character Developments
- Chapter Master Corvu is presented as calm, strategic, and decisive. He recognizes that victory in orbit is not enough and prioritizes the larger campaign by planning to relieve the besieged ground forces.
- Corvu and the senior Nova Marines have completed the Primaris transformation, making them physically larger and more formidable.
- The Ork Warboss is shown as violent, impulsive, and exhilarated by battle. His response to the destruction of one of his ships—killing a Gretchin and demanding a suicidal counterattack—demonstrates both his brutality and the Orkish delight in war.
- The Big Mek attempts to save the damaged Ork vessel by forcing the Boyz to cooperate, but his efforts fail under Imperial bombardment.
- The Imperial officers accompanying Corvu appear united and attentive, awaiting his tactical decision.
Significant Themes
- The overwhelming scale of the universe: The chapter opens by contrasting humanity’s vast Imperium with the incomprehensible size of the galaxy and universe, emphasizing humanity’s insignificance and vulnerability.
- War as survival: The Imperium’s campaigns are portrayed not as simple conquest but as desperate efforts to preserve human civilization amid the Great Rift and expanding chaos.
- Technology versus instinct: Imperial warfare relies on disciplined organization and advanced military technology, while Ork technology appears crude and impossible—yet works because of the Orks’ mysterious nature.
- Orkish joy in violence: For the Orks, destruction and death are sources of excitement rather than fear. Their suicidal enthusiasm contrasts sharply with the Imperium’s strategic, survival-oriented mindset.
- The importance of decisive action: Corvu recognizes that prolonged conflict benefits the Orks, especially on the planet’s surface, and therefore chooses a direct attack on the enemy command structure.
Character Interactions
- The Ork Warboss physically abuses a Gretchin to vent his anger, prompting cheers from nearby Orks and reinforcing their admiration for brutality.
- The Big Mek beats the Ork Boyz to force them to help repair and preserve their damaged ship.
- Ork crews communicate their enthusiasm through repeated “WAAAGH!” chants after receiving orders to attack.
- Corvu confers with the Nova Marines’ Chaplain, Librarian, and company captains aboard the Sword of the Emperor. When the First Captain asks what should be done, Corvu answers with the plan to board the largest Ork ship and eliminate its Warboss.
