Background / History
Hagrid brought infant Harry Potter to the Dursleys eleven years before returning to collect him for Hogwarts. He considers himself one of the people Dumbledore trusts most, though he arrives without Harry's letter or his umbrella, which conceals his repaired broken wand. The Ministry still considers him a suspect in Myrtle's death and does not permit him to use a wand openly. 8 9
He serves as Hogwarts' Forbidden Forest Keeper and has extensive practical knowledge of the forest's inhabitants. He is closely connected to Aragog and his Acromantula colony, feeds Thestrals, and is willing to let Harry train in the forest because he believes even a Fire Dragon could not break Harry's skin. 10 22 27
Appearance
Hagrid is a towering, exceptionally broad half-giant with small beetle-like black eyes. His great size requires first-years to duck beneath the ivy curtain during the boat ride into Hogwarts. 8 17
- Much larger and wider than Harry, even before Harry's later growth 8
- Beard and hair can be frosted after long-distance flights on Buckbeak 8
- Often carries a lantern while guiding new Hogwarts students 17
- Keeps a small pink umbrella that hides his repaired wand 9
Personality
Hagrid is fiercely protective of Harry and reacts angrily to any suggestion that the Dursleys mistreated him. He flew roughly 430 miles from Hogwarts to Surrey in under an hour on Buckbeak after reading Dumbledore's letter. 8
He is highly emotional, easily moved to tears, and notably scatterbrained. He forgets important items, reveals secrets with little prompting, and takes pride in being trusted by Dumbledore. 9 27 42
His enthusiasm for magical creatures regularly overrides caution and regulations. He defends creatures he considers innocent, despises executioner Walden Macnair, and is willing to house dangerous beings near Hogwarts. 27 35 38

Story Role / Major Arcs
Bringing Harry into the Magical World

Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley
Hagrid takes Harry through Diagon Alley but is unable to stop him from charging into Knockturn Alley and defeating its dark wizards. Though stunned by Harry's power, Hagrid praises the public humiliation of Lucius Malfoy and offers the Forbidden Forest as a place to keep magical creatures if necessary. 10 11
Hogwarts Guide and Forest Keeper
Hagrid gathers the first-years at the station, guides them by boat to Hogwarts, and later becomes one of Harry's main sources of information about the Forbidden Forest. He shares details about trolls, Acromantulas, and Quirrell's aptitude with trolls. 17 27
The Dragon Egg
Hagrid discovers a Norwegian Ridgeback egg near Aragog's territory and argues that keeping it in the Forbidden Forest is lawful under a loophole. He defends the egg from Lucius Malfoy's proposal to involve Macnair, then works with Kettleburn to prepare a secure enclosure. 34 35 38
Acromantula-Dragon Incident
The egg hatches into a Fire Dragon hybridized with an Acromantula through Dark Magic. Hagrid joins Dumbledore and Kettleburn in examining it; despite the creature biting his hand, Hagrid remains fatherly toward it. 39
