Background / History

Voldemort was reduced to a bodiless state after his conflict with Harry Potter. His continued existence rests on Horcruxes: as long as one remained, he could not be permanently killed. He subsequently attached himself to Quirinus Quirrell, using the professor as both host and agent while pursuing the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry’s death. 12 16

His plans suffered repeated setbacks at Hogwarts. A soul fragment associated with Tom Riddle’s diary was lost following Peter Pettigrew’s death, and Voldemort later moved Ravenclaw’s Diadem from the Room of Requirement. He ordered Quirrell to awaken the Basilisk to test and eliminate Harry, but Harry captured it first. 16 18 23 24

Voldemort then arranged for a dragon egg to hatch early through the sacrifice of Acromantulas, intending for the resulting 5X-class Acromantula-Dragon to create enough chaos for his resurrection plan. After drawing closer to the Moon, Voldemort claimed that its magic restored some of his reason and soothed his damaged soul.
