Background / History
Voldemort attended Hogwarts as a Slytherin and was once Dumbledore’s student. Dumbledore considers his failure to properly educate the young Riddle his greatest regret, associating that failure with the deaths of the subsequent wizarding war 2 6.
During his rise, Voldemort used murder, arson, and theft to raise funds. His Death Eaters killed numerous wizards, while the Ministry accumulated unresolved missing-person cases 22 39. He established an inner circle whose members received the Dark Mark after demonstrating outstanding service and loyalty 32.
Peter Pettigrew led him to the Potter manor, where Voldemort recalls being killed by an unknown force. Harry Potter is publicly celebrated as the boy who defeated him. Later, Tom’s claim that the Death Eaters contained a spy leads Voldemort to suspect Pettigrew of engineering his downfall 3 10 34.
By the Hogwarts events, Voldemort survives through Quirrell, with his face appearing on the back of the professor’s head 33 36.
Personality
Voldemort remains proud and domineering despite his dependence on Quirrell. He belittles his host even while relying on him to survive, dismisses the possibility of needing help from a half-blood, and initially responds to Tom’s impersonation with furious denial 34 36.
His confidence becomes a vulnerability when Tom reproduces his exclusive magic and manner of speaking. Rather than recognize the deception, Voldemort gradually interprets Tom’s rapid learning as evidence that the boy is his restored original self. He eventually considers sharing his Dark Arts knowledge in the hope that Tom will give him an independent body 34 36 37.
Abilities & Skills
Dark Mark
- Created the exclusive magic used to brand core Death Eaters and connect them to their leader 32 33.
- The mark combines life detection, long-range communication, mind perception, and pain punishment 36.
- Its secrets remained beyond the Ministry’s analysis after ten years of investigation 33 36.
- Tom’s ability to reproduce it silently and wandlessly becomes the strongest evidence convincing Voldemort that the boy is his original body 34 36.
Soul Magic and Survival
- Possesses knowledge of soul division and Horcruxes 36 41.
- Survives through Quirrell and can speak from the face on the back of his host’s head 33 34.
- His survival is precarious: he depends on Quirrell and cannot move freely as an independent person 34 36.
- Soul splitting is described as having diminished his intelligence, emotional judgment, and appearance 36.
Potion-Making
- Supplements Quirrell’s instruction with optimizations during Tom’s potion training 40.
- Helps demonstrate the brewing of Vitality Potion and monitors Tom’s subsequent attempt for apparent mistakes 41.
- Tom produces a batch with properties identical to Voldemort’s demonstration, surprising him 41.
Theft and Infiltration
- Assists Tom through Quirrell during the theft of ingredients from Snape’s private stores 38.
- The Gringotts break-in remains unsolved despite extensive goblin expenditure; Tom regards this as evidence of Voldemort’s skill as a thief 39.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Wand — Yew wood with a phoenix core. A wand tested by Harry uses wood from the same yew tree, but its core comes from a different phoenix 5.
Relationships
- Tom Marvolo Riddle, the younger student — Initially an unwelcome impersonator, later accepted as Voldemort’s original body. Tom exploits that belief to secure cooperation and instruction 33 34 36 37.
- Quirinus Quirrell — Host and servant. Voldemort’s intimidation damages Quirrell’s confidence, while Tom’s encouragement helps the professor recover his teaching ability 33 36.
- Albus Dumbledore — Former teacher and opponent. Dumbledore’s guilt over Voldemort’s rise drives his determination to prevent the younger Tom from following the same path 2 6.
- Severus Snape — A Death Eater secretly loyal to Dumbledore. Snape maintains contacts to monitor Voldemort’s return and hates him for Lily’s death 20 21.
- Peter Pettigrew — Led Voldemort to the Potter manor. Voldemort later suspects him of betrayal and threatens him with torture 34.
- Harry Potter — Publicly credited with defeating Voldemort; Dumbledore continues investigating who may ultimately fulfill the prophecy against him 3 22.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Invitation and Identity Reversal
Voldemort uses Quirrell to invite Tom to a private discussion after Defense Against the Dark Arts class. The encounter reverses their expected positions: Tom brands Quirrell with the Dark Mark and claims to be the real Voldemort 32 33.
Tom then presents the soul attached to Quirrell as merely a Horcrux. Voldemort initially rejects this explanation, but Tom’s magic, speech, and claims about an infiltrator in the Death Eaters undermine his certainty 34.
Reluctant Cooperation
Tom explains his limited spell knowledge as a side effect of resurrection in a modified Muggle body. Voldemort accepts the story and interprets Tom’s improvement as forgotten expertise returning 36.
By the following training sessions, Voldemort openly addresses Tom as his original body. He participates in the ingredient theft and potion lessons, becoming an adviser to the student who has appropriated his identity 37 38 40 41.
