Elizabeth often felt a little guilty.
Ever since she had finished sorting through the books her distant cousin had left behind, she hadn't gone back to his house. It was in a remote place, of course, and his house was an abandoned one with no one living in it. Still, she ought to go back at least once to sort through the rest of his belongings. After all, she had been almost the only relative her reclusive cousin had.
But whenever she thought about it, all sorts of things came up.
Her classmates all thought the same thing: working part-time for Professor Armitage must be respectable and easy.
In reality, there was far more work than they imagined. As the library director, Professor Armitage could always find Elizabeth an excessive amount of paperwork to sort through.

Although she had never taken Dr. Morgan's Pharmacology class, he had always been on good terms with Professor Armitage, so Elizabeth had gotten to know him, too.
As it happened, Dr. Morgan was at the library that day. When Elizabeth found him, he had just come out of a room.
