Background / History

Armitage has long investigated cultists and dangerous occult materials. The Cultist Skull Museum holds the remains of multiple cultists he killed, including Green Eyes of the All-Seer cult, killed in 1889, and Oliver of Dunwich, whom Armitage personally executed near Arkham. 67 82

He knew Sawyer Walter in Dunwich decades earlier, when Sawyer assisted him. Though they had not met for over thirty years, Armitage still considered Sawyer a reliable friend. 69 118

As director of Phillips Library, Armitage oversees occult holdings including the Necronomicon and the Skull Museum. He corresponded with Wilbur Whateley for six years and acknowledges Wilbur's scholarly ability, but never trusted him enough to lend him the Necronomicon. He respects privacy around occult matters. After Hope's encounter with Skull No. 1, Armitage makes clear that he is not interrogating him and accepts Hope's refusal to explain his past. His trust is based on Hope having protected Elizabeth rather than on a full account of Hope's origins. 89
