"Can you tell me why now? Why did you choose such a dangerous job?"
As the carriage rolled along, Ul looked at Levy, seated opposite him, and asked in a measured voice.
He had already read the job Levy had chosen. The request itself was simple, but the danger was extraordinary.
A job like this was completely unsuitable for a Mage like Levy. That was why both Makarov and Ul had known there was something suspicious about it as soon as she accepted it.
That was also why Makarov had tried to stop Levy from taking the job in the first place.
Judging by her rank in the Mage Guild, Levy was actually a higher-ranked Mage than Ul. She had already been promoted to a B-class Mage.
But when it came to combat ability, Ul could cut down several Levys with a single swing.
That was because Levy wasn't a combat Mage. She was a research Mage.
The two were roughly like special forces soldiers and scientists.
People in this world needed Mages for far more than just fighting. Levy usually chose jobs that involved helping people decipher texts and the like. This time, though, she had done the exact opposite. Anyone could see that something was wrong.
Faced with Ul's question, Levy fell silent for a moment. Then she spoke in a low voice. "That monster... was the one that destroyed my hometown and Jet and Troy's!"
Her answer caught Ul slightly off guard, and he froze for a moment.
But then a wave of anger welled up inside him. His voice edged with irritation as he asked, "So you chose this job to get revenge? Didn't you consider the difference in strength?"
"I... I don't know!" Levy clutched her head in pain, her eyes turning slightly red.
