Background
Ryuen established control over his first-year Class C through violence soon after enrollment. His class lost nearly 500 Class Points during the initial conduct assessment because of its disorder, but Ryuen subsequently forced its students into discipline and stabilized the class. Albert became his chief enforcer after being won over by Ryuen’s refusal to yield, while Kaneda and Shiina supported the class academically. 82
His early schemes included withdrawing Class C’s complaint against Sudō when video evidence could not conclusively support it. He then arranged a dinner with Shuichi Kanda through Shiina, resulting in a conditional alliance: Ryuen would refrain from targeting Class D before the summer exam, while Kanda would not pursue a countersuit over the false accusation. 47 48
During the Uninhabited Island Exam, Ryuen made a supply-and-intelligence deal with Class A, deployed Ibuki to infiltrate Class D, and maintained a separate spy in Class B. He also deceived Katsuragi about Kōenji’s movements while withholding his real conclusions. His class ultimately won the exam. 64 72 74
Personality
Ryuen rules through intimidation, provocation, and a willingness to exploit weaknesses. He uses vulgar taunts against people he disdains, tries to destabilize opponents emotionally, and openly values results over sportsmanship or goodwill. 80 134 222
He is also pragmatic. Ryuen abandons a fight when the risk outweighs the gain, as when he stopped Ishizaki from confronting Hōsen under surveillance, and he readily lies or changes plans when it improves his position. 72 243
Despite his cruelty, Ryuen is strongly invested in his class’s survival. He knelt before Kanda to protect Class C from the consequences of the Paper Shuffle scheme, and he took responsibility for the rooftop assault to reduce the danger to his subordinates. 162 176
Ryuen claims never to have felt fear. After Ayanokōji overwhelmed him, Albert, and Ishizaki, he remained defiant and treated his defeat as a reason to seek revenge rather than surrender. 175
Abilities & Skills
Class Leadership and Coercion
Ryuen can impose order on a formerly undisciplined class through force of personality and calculated violence.
- Consolidated control of Class C after its severe first-month point losses. 82
- Retook undisputed leadership of his later Class D and received its Protection Point despite widespread dislike of him. 209
- Uses Albert, Ishizaki, Kaneda, Ibuki, and other followers in specialized roles. 57 64 172
Strategic Planning and Espionage
Ryuen combines surveillance, spies, misinformation, and contracts to manipulate special exams.
- Sent Ibuki into Class D and planted a separate spy in Class B during the Uninhabited Island Exam. 64
- Misled Katsuragi with fabricated information about Kōenji while continuing to investigate Class D’s leader. 72
- Deleted message histories during the VIP Exam to restrict knowledge of VIP identities to trusted followers. 83 88
- Used Karuizawa’s past bullying as leverage to obtain Class D’s Sports Festival participant order. 124
Psychological Provocation
Ryuen deliberately creates situations in which opponents lose control or compromise themselves.
- Let Sudō punch him during the Sports Festival, securing Sudō’s disqualification. 135 136
- Provoked Satō Ken after manipulating the tug-of-war match, causing Satō’s disqualification for fouling him. 134
- Used Kinoshita’s injury accusation to pressure Horikita when she lacked evidence to defend herself. 136
- Chose Class C as an opponent in Karate specifically to disrupt Kanda’s plans, even though it meant accepting a likely loss. 222
Negotiation and Resource Acquisition
Ryuen consistently treats Private Points, contracts, and student transfers as strategic resources.
- Secured a deal requiring Class A to provide 800,000 Private Points monthly in exchange for supplies and intelligence. 64
- Negotiated with first-year classes to place them in protected bottom positions during the later Uninhabited Island Exam, charging each class 2 million Private Points and demanding Invalidation Cards. 253 254
- Purchased island points from withdrawing participants, then used the information to coordinate interference against Nagumo. 280
- Pursues a long-term plan to collect 800 million Private Points so that every member of his class can graduate from Class A. 183 291
Combat and Resilience
Ryuen is an aggressive fighter with exceptional tolerance for pain and defeat, though he was decisively outclassed by Ayanokōji.
- Personally leads confrontations and directs coordinated attacks with Albert and Ishizaki. 174 175
- Continued fighting Ayanokōji after being thrown into his own allies and repeatedly knocked down. 175
- Was left unconscious after Ayanokōji defeated him and his group on the rooftop. 175
- Avoids fights he judges unwinnable, demonstrating that his aggression is not entirely reckless. 243
Relationships
- Shuichi Kanda — Rival, occasional ally, and fellow manipulator. They formed a conditional alliance against Class A, cooperated in multiple exams, and repeatedly tried to outmaneuver one another. 48 74 162 183
- Ibuki Mio — Subordinate, spy, and frequent source of internal friction. Ryuen sent her to infiltrate Class D, while she openly challenged his methods; he later showed unusual gentleness toward her during the school trip. 59 64 348
- Yamada Albert — Ryuen’s principal enforcer. Albert followed Ryuen after being impressed by his refusal to yield and frequently acts on his orders. 82 95 172
- Kaneda Satoru — One of Ryuen’s foremost strategists and an important academic asset to the class. 57 82
- Hiyori Shiina — Academically capable classmate whom Ryuen used to arrange his first meeting with Kanda; she later helped smooth over negotiations with first-year representatives. 47 83 253
- Horikita Suzune — Primary target during the first Sports Festival. Ryuen manipulated her through leaks, provocations, and Kinoshita’s staged injury accusation. 129 136 137
- Kiyotaka Ayanokōji — Enemy who defeated Ryuen’s entire combat group in the rooftop incident. Ryuen remained interested in Ayanokōji’s true identity and capabilities afterward. 174 175 182
- Sakayanagi Arisu — Transactional rival and occasional employer. Sakayanagi paid Ryuen to pursue mutual destruction with Class B, while their later confrontations were marked by direct provocation and hostility. 83 173
