Background / History
Ambition to Become Yan Hai’s Disciple
Li Yao had long sought instruction from Councilor Yan Hai and already regarded himself as his disciple before being formally accepted. He believed Yan Hai’s guidance could substantially improve his chances of becoming a councilor 68.
Bai Yang’s rapid rise threatened that ambition. When Bai Yang cleared the Trial Tower’s third floor in thirty-seven minutes, Li Yao feared Yan Hai would lose interest in taking him as a disciple. The concern stemmed from Yan Hai’s bitter rivalry with Jia Yi, whose close relationship with Bai Yang was widely known 68.
Revenge for Li Wei
Following their son Li Wei’s death, Li Yao and his wife offered 100 billion Huaxia dollars for information identifying the killer 92.
Hong’s accidental disclosure that Luo Feng was a Spirit Reader allowed the couple to identify their target. Li Yao organized an expedition to Australia with laser cannons, War God subordinates, and his longtime companions Wang Tong and Li Kan. During their confrontation, his Black God Set resisted Luo Feng’s throwing knives, and his counterattack injured Luo Feng and forced him to retreat 110.
Targeting the Luo Family
After Luo Feng was presumed dead inside Ruins No. 9, Li Yao and his wife turned their revenge toward his relatives. An earlier attempt had been stopped by the chairman of the HR Alliance’s Underground Council; their renewed plan used hired agents to psychologically torment the family into breakdown or suicide while avoiding direct blame 120.
Their conversation was secretly recorded through cameras carried by Wang Tong and Li Kan. Bai Yang obtained the footage and deployed Mount Hua’s Ninth Group to protect the family. Yuan Jingfu stopped hired women from assaulting Gong Xinlan, while Bai Yang also intercepted a staged car accident targeting Luo Hongguo 120 125.
Bai Yang publicly exposed the scheme and its financial trail without naming the couple, then warned that anyone who touched the Luo family would die. Terrified of retaliation, Li Yao and his wife fled Jiangnan Base City for Europe 120 121.
Formal Discipleship and Defeat
In Paris, Li Yao pleaded for Yan Hai’s protection. Yan Hai formally accepted him as a disciple and gave him a cultivation journal containing his methods and breakthrough experience. The public ceremony became a political challenge to Bai Yang, supported by Fifth Speaker Atkin 121.
The ceremony was overshadowed by Bai Yang’s livestreamed sixth-floor Trial Tower challenge. More than two-thirds of the guests withdrew to watch, leaving Li Yao largely ignored even on the day celebrating his discipleship 122.
Li Yao remained hidden in Yan Hai’s villa afterward. Having witnessed Bai Yang’s performance, he found his teacher’s journal unimpressive by comparison and struggled to concentrate on it 126.
When Luo Feng returned and learned what had happened to his family, he attacked the villa with Bai Yang accompanying him. Luo Feng’s throwing knives critically injured Li Yao and killed his wife. The couple were subsequently sentenced to death for attempting to harm a War God’s family; Li Yao was described as having been beaten to the brink of death 125 126 129.
Personality
Li Yao was proud of his standing among Advanced War Gods. He asserted that Jia Yi’s disciples Jiang Long and Lu Ting were no match for him, particularly when he wore the Black God Set. Nevertheless, Bai Yang’s achievements made him anxious about his own prospects and Yan Hai’s opinion of him 68.
His grief over Li Wei developed into calculated cruelty toward Luo Feng’s family. Rather than merely ordering an attack, he sought to make them destroy themselves through psychological torment so that responsibility could not be pinned on him 120.
Despite his confidence against weaker opponents, he feared Bai Yang’s retaliation enough to flee and seek protection. He readily accepted Yan Hai’s suggestion that Bai Yang’s restraint indicated stalled cultivation—a mistaken interpretation of Bai Yang’s decision to leave the couple to Luo Feng 121.
