Background / History

Class D begins the school year as the least orderly of the four first-year classes. During the entrance ceremony, it is the only class making noise and has neither a recognized leader nor a consensus on how to preserve its points. Its students are divided into cliques with little ability to coordinate or form a class-wide strategy. 7 11

The class is later described as containing the potential for a council-style leadership rather than a single ruler. Hirata Yosuke has broad trust among both boys and girls, Kushida Kikyo maintains superficial goodwill across the class, and Horikita Suzune can provide the initiative needed to spur action. 11

Sudo Incident and Debt

Class D’s first major crisis begins when Ken Sudo is provoked by Class C students and lured into the Traditional Literature Club room, where Class C stages injuries to frame him for violence. Sudo’s poor reputation within his own class leaves him with little immediate support. 15 16

Hirata and Kushida rally the class after learning that Sudo’s expulsion would cost Class D 300 class points. Class B, led by Ichinose Honami, also chooses to aid Class D despite the risk to its own points. 16 18

At the Student Council hearing, Class D’s unverified counter-testimony is undermined when Class C produces an audio recording exposing attempts to bribe Basketball Club witnesses. With surveillance footage and Class C’s witnesses also favoring the accusation, Class D is left unable to overturn the case. 20 21

To avoid Sudo’s expulsion, Hirata and Kushida negotiate with Ryuen Kakeru. Class D accepts agreements requiring an initial payment for information and ongoing compensation; its monthly payment is reduced to 900,000 private points, but failure to pay would place the class under Class C’s orders during future special exams. The arrangement raises Class D’s effective monthly survival threshold above 225 class points. 22 23

Academic Recovery

Despite its low standing, Class D improves enough for Sudo to pass the midterm examination after studying seriously following the apology incident and leaving the Basketball Club. 35

Class D lacks a single acknowledged leader. Its most influential students instead fill separate functions:

The class attempts to protect Sudo from expulsion but is outmaneuvered by Class C’s prepared evidence and its own failed witness strategy. The resulting settlement turns Class D into a financially constrained class dependent on loans, repayments, and outside support. 16 21 23

Card-Game Special Exam

Class D sends Yukimura Teruhiko as its first representative, relying on his strong academic ability and calculation skills. 41

Sakura competes in the ninth round and is later regarded as the only participant clearly uninvolved in the class’s suspected card-trading betrayal. Her recommendation leads Class D to select Hasebe for the first tiebreaker. 42

Under Hasebe’s play, Class D maintains an early lead in the tiebreaker. Ayanokoji is then selected to face Sakayanagi in the deciding match, securing Class D second place and its 500,000-point reward. 43 44 45
