Background and History

Ichigo is the son of former Shinigami captain Shiba Isshin, later known as Kurosaki Isshin, and the Quincy Kurosaki Masaki. Hollow power also exists within him because of the Hollowfication Masaki suffered before his birth. Isshin chose the character Ichi, meaning “protect,” for his son’s name in the hope that he would protect his mother 176 177 180 200.

As a child, Ichigo could see spirits. At nine, he encountered a Hollow while walking with Masaki; she lost her Quincy powers and was injured protecting him before Natsuki intervened. Ichigo subsequently took up karate so he would be better prepared to defend her. He became friends with fellow trainee Tatsuki Arisawa 181 182 183 238.

Rukia’s transfer of power brought Ichigo into Shinigami work in Karakura Town. When she was taken back to Soul Society and imprisoned, he entered the Dangai with Inoue Orihime, Sado Yasutora, and Ishida Uryū to rescue her. He defeated Abarai Renji and, after training with Natsuki, defeated Kuchiki Byakuya. Soul Society then recognized him as a Substitute Shinigami 183 184 185 191 196 197.

Appearance

Ichigo’s appearance changes conspicuously during his training for the Final Getsuga Tenshō and its release 234 235.

  • After months inside a Time Barrier, his orange hair is long and his features appear more mature; his Zanpakutō has fused with his right arm 234 235.
  • While unleashing Mugetsu, his hair turns black, his eyes turn red, bandages wrap around him, and the blade disappears 235.

Personality

Ichigo’s desire to protect others drives his decisions even when he does not know the risks. He enters Soul Society without a clear plan for what follows Rukia’s rescue, and later rushes into the Hollow Drift to save Shizuku. His willingness to act can be reckless, but he remains committed when outmatched 185 201.

He is attentive to his family: as a schoolboy, he accepts his parents’ anniversary trip because he recognizes how much they do for their children. Aizen’s revelation as a manipulative teacher leaves him angry and confused, but does not change his conviction to protect the people he cares about 183 235.

Abilities and Skills

Zanpakutō and Getsuga Tenshō

Ichigo wields Zangetsu and uses Getsuga Tenshō, a crescent-shaped attack that Shiba Kaien identifies as a Shiba House technique 187 230.

  • Uses Shunpo and swordsmanship in his fight with Kaien 187.
  • In Bankai, gains enough speed to evade arrows and releases a black Getsuga Tenshō 201.
  • Later uses Getsuga Jūjishō to wound Yhwach 294.

Hollowfication

Aizen teaches Ichigo to draw on the Hollow power within him. Ichigo uses a Hollow mask against Byakuya and again during the fight to rescue Shizuku 194 202.

  • The mask brings a powerful change in his aura, which Ichigo suppresses through force of will 194.
  • He cannot maintain the state for long during his battle with Byakuya 194.

Final Getsuga Tenshō

Isshin guides Ichigo through training centered on communication with Zangetsu. The resulting Mugetsu destroys Aizen and shatters the Hōgyoku, but leaves Ichigo unable to use Shinigami powers or see spirits afterward 230 235 238.

Fullbring

Ginjō Kūgo trains Ichigo in Fullbring as part of the effort to restore his spiritual power. Ichigo subsequently regains his Shinigami powers 239 241 242.

Equipment and Items

  • Zangetsu — Ichigo’s long-serving blade. He hesitates to give it up when told it is not a true Zanpakutō and could be used to forge one 247 250.
  • True Zanpakutō — Forged during his visit to the Soul King Palace. Its creation helps him understand the sources of his powers 252.
  • Substitute Shinigami Badge — Lets him perform his duties and communicate with the Gotei 13, chiefly through Shiba Kaien 198.
  • Royal Guard Shihakushō — A durable replacement garment made from scraps associated with Royal Guard members’ Ōken 249.

Relationships

  • Kurosaki Isshin and Kurosaki Masaki — His parents. Masaki protects him from a Hollow when he is nine; Isshin later guides his Final Getsuga Tenshō training 180 181 230.
  • Kuchiki Rukia — Transfers her powers to Ichigo and guides his early Shinigami work. Her imprisonment prompts his rescue mission 183 184.
  • Natsuki Kenpachi — Trains Ichigo in Bankai and becomes a teacher to him; later reveals truths about Ichigo’s powers and lineage 191 196 250.
  • Aizen Sōsuke — Ichigo’s former karate and swordsmanship teacher, who draws out his powers and teaches him Hollowfication while using him for his own plans. Ichigo ultimately defeats him 194 196 235.
  • Shiba Kaien — Recognizes Ichigo’s use of a Shiba technique and later serves as his Soul Society contact and guide 187 198.
  • Ishida Uryū, Inoue Orihime, and Sado Yasutora — Friends who accompany Ichigo to rescue Rukia and continue fighting alongside him 185 198.
  • Shizuku — Ichigo risks his life to rescue her from the Hollow Drift and later welcomes her into his home 201 203.

Story Role and Major Arcs

  • Rescue of Rukia — Ichigo enters Soul Society after Rukia’s arrest, learns Bankai under Natsuki, and defeats Byakuya. The captains subsequently grant him Substitute Shinigami status 184 191 194 196 197.
  • Hollow Drift — Investigates the Memory Bead and enters the collapsing Hollow Drift to rescue Shizuku, with Natsuki joining the fight 200 201 202.
  • Battle for Karakura Town — Trains in the Final Getsuga Tenshō while Aizen threatens the city, then defeats him with Mugetsu at the cost of his powers 230 235 238.
  • War against Yhwach — Regains his powers, forges a true Zanpakutō, and joins the defense of Soul Society. After Yhwach destroys his Bankai, allied intervention lets Ichigo use it again to strike the final blow 241 252 270 294 295.
