Background / History

Aizen was born in the outer Rukon District, where Hollow attacks, harsh living conditions, and violent residents shaped his belief that only power could prevent others from oppressing him. After witnessing a Shinigami kill a Hollow and cow the local thugs, he entered the Shino Academy, where his talent allowed him to excel easily 215.

At the academy, Aizen deliberately cultivated a kind, approachable image. He continued this facade after entering the Gotei 13, presenting himself as a gentle and humble officer while privately pursuing knowledge and power. Upon learning Kyōka Suigetsu's true ability, he concealed it behind a false public description of a water-type Zanpakutō that refracted mist and light 53 215.

Aizen became a seated officer and eventually Hirako Shinji's lieutenant in the 5th Division, gaining access to deeper secrets of Soul Society. His research into the Soul King, the origin of the nobles, and the stagnation of Soul Society eroded his loyalty to both the Gotei 13 and the noble houses 109 215.

Having already reached the limits of ordinary Shinigami growth, he investigated Hollow evolution as a possible path beyond that boundary. His visit to Hueco Mundo and observation of Hollows surviving broken masks inspired secret Hollowfication research in the Rukon District. He harvested souls with Shinigami potential, studied forbidden noble experiments, and used Kyōka Suigetsu to conceal his movements 109 127.

Aizen also allied with the Tsunayashiro Clan, using Kyōka Suigetsu's hypnosis alongside Enrakyōten's Zanpakutō-mimicking properties to manufacture evidence and false testimony against Natsuki 139 140. His deception was uncovered after Azashiro Kenpachi bypassed Kyōka Suigetsu by merging his Reiatsu into surrounding matter 139.

After Natsuki exposed the truth of his Zanpakutō, Aizen fought him openly but failed to hypnotize him because Natsuki kept his eyes closed during Kyōka Suigetsu's release. Wounded by Natsuki and Azashiro's covert intervention, Aizen escaped before the Gotei 13 could arrest him 149 150 152.

He fled to Hueco Mundo, partnered with Szayelaporro, and developed Arrancar by enabling Hollows to break their limits and manifest Zanpakutō-like weapons. He later took control of Hueco Mundo and ruled from Las Noches 166 167 215 216.

Aizen initially maintains the appearance of a mild-mannered 5th Division lieutenant, using it to reinforce his public persona. His appearance becomes progressively less human as his Hollow and Hōgyoku-derived power develops.

Personality

Aizen is exceptionally intelligent, patient, and calculating. He spent years making his kindness appear effortless, using good reputation, careful timing, and Kyōka Suigetsu to place much of the Gotei 13 under hypnosis without arousing suspicion 53 85 215.

Behind that facade, he is cold, proud, and ruthlessly self-serving. He regards people—including Hollows, Shinigami, and prospective Arrancar—as experiments or tools in his pursuit of evolution. His willingness to harvest souls, manipulate allies, and sacrifice the noble class reflects his belief that no one else's life should obstruct his goals 85 127 195 215.

Aizen despises Soul Society's stagnation and noble hierarchy, viewing its Shinigami as indoctrinated tools. He frames his ambition as a revolution: to destroy the existing order, create a new one, confront the Soul King, and ultimately stand at the summit of the world 173 180 229.

His pride repeatedly prevents him from accepting inferiority. He considers Natsuki a rare rival, resents being defeated by him, and becomes increasingly unstable when power beyond his control threatens the identity he built around self-mastery 173 194 217.

Exposure and Defection

Natsuki confronts Aizen over his role in framing him and identifies Kyōka Suigetsu's true power. After a battle in which his hypnosis fails, Aizen is injured and his criminal history is confirmed through the Great Spiritual Archive. He disappears from Soul Society before arrest 148 153.

Hueco Mundo Research and Arrancar Creation

In Hueco Mundo, Aizen joins forces with Szayelaporro to investigate the fusion of Shinigami and Hollow power. He creates Arrancar, organizes the Espada, and eventually seizes Las Noches as Hueco Mundo's ruler 166 167 173 216.

War Against Soul Society

Aizen returns to Soul Society's attention through Arrancar attacks in the Human World, his attack on Shiba Isshin, and his manipulation of events surrounding Rukia's execution.
