Background / History
Sarutobi was a disciple of the Second Hokage, Senju Tobirama, alongside Mitokado Homura, Utatane Koharu, and Shimura Danzō. When Hanyu Yu delivered Tobirama’s final letter to Konoha, Sarutobi personally arranged medical care for the injured messenger and heard the account of Tobirama’s death. The authenticated letter named Sarutobi as Tobirama’s successor and entrusted Konoha’s future to him. 4 5
His succession initially faced doubt because he was only in his early twenties and Tobirama’s appointment had been made immediately before his death. The written order settled the question of legitimacy, and Sarutobi assumed leadership as acting Hokage before receiving the Daimyo’s formal appointment as the Third Hokage. 5 25 90
Sarutobi consolidated Konoha’s early post-Tobirama administration with Homura and Koharu overseeing logistics, Danzō directing internal affairs and intelligence, and Kagami Uchiha and Akimichi Tori supervising the war effort. He later strengthened the Hokage’s direct forces by establishing Root as an Anbu training organization under Danzō. 23 93
During the war against Sunagakure, Sarutobi led from the front and defeated the Second Kazekage in a decisive duel. The victory united Konoha’s clans behind his leadership, silenced doubts about his youth, and allowed the village to largely extricate itself from the Great Ninja War. 61 66 69
He later led Konoha’s Rain Village rescue operation, balancing concern for his endangered students with his responsibility to recover Konoha’s captured shinobi. He accepted Hanzo’s proposed peace on the conditions that Rain could stabilize itself and return Konoha’s prisoners. 136 137
In later years, Sarutobi supported the Uzumaki Clan’s integration into Konoha and approved Hanyu’s proposal to establish Shadow Flow. As war expanded again, he tried to shape public opinion in favor of one of his three disciples eventually succeeding him, while continuing to rely on Hanyu despite the latter’s disruptive independence. 175 176 317 336
During the Third Shinobi World War, Sarutobi personally departed for the northern front to contain Kumogakure’s advance while Hanyu remained in Konoha to preserve internal stability. Sarutobi died on the front lines, ending the era of Konoha under the Third Hokage. 469 496
Personality
Sarutobi presented himself as composed, mature, and methodical even while still a young Hokage. His military decisions favored stability and incremental gains rather than risky brilliance, a style that made Konoha the most advantageous of the major villages during his early rule. 78
He was compassionate toward Konoha’s people and subordinates. He ensured medical treatment for Hanyu upon the boy’s arrival, resisted treating Hanyu as expendable despite Danzō’s proposal, and prioritized rescuing endangered shinobi during the Rain operation. 4 8 136
His empathy did not prevent him from making severe political choices. He pursued Konoha’s authority over the Land of Fire’s capital, created Root to reinforce the Hokage faction, and accepted Hizashi Hyuga’s death as the price of peace with Kumogakure amid overwhelming village pressure. 93 192
Sarutobi could adapt when necessity demanded it. Hanyu’s unconventional operations repeatedly alarmed him, but he continued to employ Hanyu’s abilities and ultimately approved plans that more traditional commanders would have rejected. 317 336

- Employed the Curse Binding Technique to immobilize the Second Kazekage. 66
- His clone independently rescued Hanyu’s squad from Sand shinobi before engaging them with combined elemental attacks. 66
Taijutsu and Staff Combat

- Wielded a massive iron staff that could extend and thicken in combat. 66
- Used the staff’s reach and force to physically drive back multiple Sand shinobi. 66
- Could intercept attacks while airborne and place himself between enemy forces and Konoha squads. 66
Enma
Sarutobi’s summoned beast, Enma, was reputed to be “indestructible as diamond.” 495

- Supported the Uzumaki Clan’s migration and integration into Konoha, while cautioning that the clan’s arrival would disrupt established interests within the village. 175

- Attempted to cultivate public support for a successor from among Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru. 317
