Background / History

Childhood and early research

Orochimaru loses his parents while still young. His interest in studying humans and snakes develops after the Third Hokage explains the snake’s symbolism to him. Having recently experienced bereavement himself, he can understand Tsunade’s grief 121 141.

Even as a child, Orochimaru possesses useful combat ability and closely observes his companions. When Hanyu’s group is followed by an assailant, he notices the surveillance and joins them. During the subsequent ambush, he restrains the attacker with snakes so the captive can be interrogated 27 56 57.

Contact with Ryūchi Cave

Hanyu recruits Orochimaru to help supervise construction at the Valley of the End, where he handles the project’s daily work efficiently. Intelligent snakes repeatedly approach the site, but Hanyu kills the first fifteen while considering whether early contact with Ryūchi Cave would be dangerous for him 169 170 171.

On the sixteenth day, Hanyu allows a snake to lead them onward. Orochimaru follows because he trusts Hanyu, not because he trusts the reptile. Hanyu eventually leaves him in Ryūchi Cave, and Orochimaru returns after completing its basic summoning-contract trial without any apparent change in personality 171 172 174 178.

Wartime service and the Sannin

Orochimaru fights alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade in the Land of Rain and joins Hanyu’s operation against Kirigakure. During the infiltration, he independently ambushes four Mist Anbu with venomous snakes and prepares materials for later experiments 308 339 343.

Against Hanzo, the three rely on antidotes while their chakra dwindles. Orochimaru and Jiraiya support Tsunade’s counterattack, kill five Rain shinobi together, and return to protect her afterward. Once Hanzo withdraws, Orochimaru stops arriving Konoha ninja from pursuing him 357 358.

Becoming a jinchūriki

Seeking prolonged life and a deeper understanding of chakra, Orochimaru asks Hanyu for the Nine-Tails. Hanyu supports the request subject to the Third Hokage’s approval. Orochimaru secures that approval and later undergoes the sealing ritual at Shadow Flow’s underground base 384 386 389 393.

Hanyu conceals the Nine-Tails Splitting Plan from him, allowing Orochimaru to believe he has received the beast transferred from Mito. Orochimaru regards his new occupant as a research subject and a tool, while Hanyu warns him against allowing the seal to fail 393 399.

Forbidden research and departure

Orochimaru’s work with Hashirama’s cells supplies the Wood Release power used during the Senju unrest. Yayoi’s unusually compatible chakra makes that power controllable. Although Orochimaru denies involvement in her abduction, he acknowledges using her chakra in his research and receives warnings from Hanyu 426 457.

He also experiments on Nawaki, granting him the First Hokage’s power through a dangerous procedure. Hanyu’s influence temporarily restrains his activities, but Orochimaru increasingly finds Konoha restrictive and its remaining research opportunities unappealing 446 563.

After Hanyu withdraws his salary and research funding and urges him to leave, Orochimaru continues cooperating with Konoha for a time. He ultimately steals forbidden- and secret-technique information from the village’s protected archives and departs. Konoha pursues him, but does not immediately classify him as a rogue shinobi 545 563 567 568.

Hashirama’s attack and return to Konoha

Orochimaru remains difficult to locate while living outside Konoha. The resurrected Hashirama eventually attacks his lair in the Land of Water, overwhelms him, and extracts the Nine-Tails. Orochimaru’s body collapses, apparently dead 608 611 612 613.

He survives through his spare-body technique, unexpectedly appears at the Five Kage Summit, and escapes using the reincarnated Tobirama’s Flying Thunder God. He then returns to Konoha to seek Hanyu’s help and share intelligence about Hashirama’s collection of the Tailed Beasts 613 614 615.

Personality

Orochimaru is quiet, analytical, and exceptionally stubborn about his research. He studies Jiraiya’s behaviour in a notebook, treating his companion as an observation sample and comparing his attempts at courtship with those of ungulates. His soft-spoken manner does not make his convictions easy to change 121 261.

His ambitions initially centre on longevity, bloodlines, and chakra’s underlying nature. Later, he recognises that reaching the limits of ninjutsu matters more to him than life itself. Hanyu describes him as someone devoted to his own interests and dangerously indifferent toward everything outside them 384 385 426.

That indifference extends to experimental subjects: he leaves Nawaki in agony while continuing his laboratory work and treats survival as the subject’s responsibility. Nevertheless, he can restrain himself, honour transactions, show concern for Hanyu, and display tenderness toward a white snake 264 441 446 568.

Hanyu remains one of the few people whose judgment and retaliation he takes seriously. Orochimaru accepts considerable influence from him, yet still pursues dangerous research when the potential reward outweighs his fear 426 568 614.
