Background / History
Secret research in Konoha
Orochimaru conducts covert experiments with Danzo’s support. An early exchange shows him killing a man with snake attacks, disposing of corpses through summoned snakes, and requesting Uchiha eyes as the final material needed for his work 9. Danzo supplies him monthly, but becomes suspicious when his research slows and his behavior grows less compliant 28.
His interest in Uchiha Itachi’s eyes brings him into contact with Roy. During their first direct encounter, Roy exposes that interest and warns him against targeting the clan. Orochimaru briefly restrains Roy with snakes, only for Roy to burn them away. Roy’s knowledge of his plans leaves him alarmed enough to reconsider his alliances 29.
The two subsequently establish a trading relationship. Orochimaru exchanges Hashirama Cells and usage guidance for four Kirigakure corpses, collecting the bodies with large snakes 43.
Defection and preparations against Hiruzen
Orochimaru demands twenty additional portions of Hashirama Cells from Danzo, claiming that a new batch of high-quality test subjects will bring his experiments close to completion. That night, he kills Sarutobi Shinnosuke and his wife, prompting Jiraiya’s pursuit 48.
Before leaving Konoha, he studies the Scroll of Seals but leaves it behind to avoid provoking an unrestricted hunt. The village discovers abandoned laboratories containing corpses and experimental equipment, and Hiruzen issues an S-rank wanted notice authorizing attacks on sight 49.
Orochimaru later receives a portion of Gyuki’s tail from Roy 70. He moves his planned operation forward because Danzo’s actions threaten to invalidate his preparations. His own body is deteriorating from hazardous research and self-experimentation, making a replacement vessel increasingly urgent 78.
Failed body and apparent death
At his Land of Grass base, Orochimaru coughs up blood and orders preparations for a seventh-stage test. He recognizes Kimimaro’s potential as a vessel but cannot resolve the disease associated with his Kekkei Genkai 125.
Orochimaru offers Roy all his research in exchange for Uchiha support during an invasion of Konoha. Roy declines the alliance, promises that the Uchiha will not obstruct him, and requests help identifying whoever placed a black-market bounty on him. The encounter ends with Roy killing Orochimaru, taking a Scroll of Seals, and leaving Kimimaro to remove the head and body 126.
Orochimaru nevertheless appears again in subsequent dealings with Danzo, including a scene in which he is weak enough to sit in a wheelchair 197 214. His research also produces an experimental ninja force supplied with people and medicinal materials by another collaborator 236.
A corpse identified as Orochimaru’s is later presented to Jiraiya and Tsunade and buried outside Konoha. He reappears on a giant snake during the ensuing attack, shocking both companions, who had personally laid him to rest that morning. The supplied passages do not explain the mechanism behind this return 243 244 245.
Battle with the Third Hokage
Orochimaru traps Hiruzen and his Anbu escorts inside a barrier, seeking a private confrontation with his former teacher 255. He rejects Hiruzen’s offer of protected confinement, reveals his replacement body, and deploys Impure World Reincarnation to turn the First and Second Hokage against him 256.
His stated purpose is not simply revenge: he wants Hiruzen to die gloriously as Hokage rather than fall victim to political schemes 256. Hiruzen counters with the Reaper Death Seal, nearly extracting Orochimaru’s soul. An intervening blade strike kills Hiruzen and collapses the seal; Orochimaru attributes the intervention to Roy before escaping underground 257.
Orochimaru subsequently claims to Danzo that he fulfilled his assignment to kill the Third Hokage. Their cooperation continues because he still needs Danzo’s assistance 270.
Chakra Fruit research and rehabilitation
At Roy’s request, Orochimaru treats Nagato with Hashirama Cells, restoring his emaciated body and planning further fusions. Although Nagato remains wary of his interest in the Rinnegan, Orochimaru says he no longer needs the eyes 271.
Orochimaru’s experiments with Hashirama Cells and tailed-beast chakra produce miniature tailed-beast-like organisms bearing branches, buds, and unusual Sharingan-like structures. He builds several hundred specimens using at least three types of tailed-beast chakra, then tests a Chakra Fruit on himself 308 309 310.
After participating in Black Market research, he supplies Roy with intelligence about its artificial Kekkei Genkai and soul-manipulation projects. Roy agrees not to attack him while he continues energy-fruit research and provides tailed-beast chakra origin as material 346 347. When Konoha mobilizes against the organization, Orochimaru kills a former research colleague and seizes a base’s supplies and documents 349.
Roy later clears his rogue-ninja status and recommends his expertise to other village leaders. Tsunade reluctantly permits his return, but first beats him severely and warns that further misconduct will bring consequences 378 379.
Return to active service
Orochimaru introduces Chakra Fruits to Jiraiya and Tsunade; Jiraiya’s use of one strengthens his chakra pathways and enables complete Sage Mode 389. He then fights Kara member Haru alongside Jiraiya, revealing his own Sage Mode. Haru’s attempt to digest the invading sage chakra ends with his body turning to stone, ruining the specimen Orochimaru wanted 403 404.
Ryūchi Cave later pledges full support for Orochimaru’s actions 419. He continues producing Chakra Fruits in an underground laboratory, supplying Roy with fruits used to replenish Lingyun Immortal Land’s origin energy while pursuing stronger versions of his product 460.
Appearance
Orochimaru’s appearance changes with his replacement bodies 256 379 460.
- Cold, sinister eyes: He studies Roy with an openly unsettling gaze 29.
- Long, serpentine tongue: Frequently extended while speaking, assessing potential vessels, or expressing excitement 48 78 403.
- Sickly appearance: His failing body coughs up blood; he retains a sickly look even after recovering from Haru’s attacks 125 403.
- Youthful replacement bodies: Revealed during his battle with Hiruzen and again around his readmission to Konoha 256 379.
Personality
Orochimaru treats immortality as a technical problem to be solved through research. His willingness to experiment on himself, acquire human subjects, and replace failing bodies makes survival inseparable from his scientific ambition 78 126 460.
He is calculating rather than indiscriminately reckless. He leaves the Scroll of Seals behind to limit pursuit, avoids attempting to possess Roy because he doubts he can overcome Roy’s consciousness, and abandons the Black Market once its destruction appears inevitable 49 125 349.
His respect for Hiruzen coexists with a determination to kill him. Orochimaru distinguishes his own pursuit of eternity from his teacher’s attachment to authority, presenting their battle as a way to preserve Hiruzen’s dignity as Hokage 43 256.
Research opportunities can overwhelm his restraint. Haru’s durable body excites him even while Haru repeatedly injures him. Around Tsunade, however, he becomes noticeably fearful and avoids remaining near her after her accumulated resentment has been made clear 379 403 404.
