Background / History

Creation and reign over Britannia

Artoria was created as an artificial Savior amid Britannia's crisis. Uther Pendragon and Merlin replaced an infant's heart with an artificial dragon heart, producing a homunculus intended to save the kingdom. 3

As King Arthur, she led Britannia while concealing her femininity beneath masculine attire. Her authority was sufficient to hold the Knights of the Round Table together despite their internal factions and rivalries, though the kingdom's worsening political and material conditions rested heavily on her shoulders. 2 3 39

She raised Artorius as her son and designated him as her successor. She also ordered Agravain to train him, recognizing his potential despite concerns over his conduct and reliance on alchemical weapons. 1 2

Britannia's decline and Arthur's rise

Artoria struggled against the Saxons and Vortigern's influence while confronting Britannia's deeper problem: the depletion of Aether and the approaching end of the Age of Gods. She permitted Arthur to lead a major battle, trusting him to develop as a commander. 5 8

Arthur's growing continental ambitions increasingly troubled her. She blamed herself for failing to guide him, yet remained unable to oppose him directly as his military, political, and economic power expanded across Britannia and Germania. 12 22

When Arthur demanded that Britannia's people be preserved regardless of the cost, Artoria agreed that she would accept even violent means and cultural assimilation if it ensured their survival. She nevertheless insisted on personally confirming the fate of the Holy Grail. 42

Abdication and reconciliation

After Galahad's sacrifice allowed Arthur to inherit the Holy Grail's power, Artoria abdicated the throne and crowned him King of Britannia. The Knights of the Round Table subsequently pledged loyalty to Arthur. 49

Artoria later revealed that Arthur was also an artificial Savior, created with a superior Heart of the Red Dragon and a soul from the future. Although she had raised him as her child, he had no blood relation to her; Arthur later described their concealed relationship as that of siblings. 51 66

Lord Artoria and the Dragon Empire

After her body resumed developing, Artoria adopted a public female identity as “Lord Artoria.” Arthur presented her to the Empire as an android created by Morgan le Fay, allowing her to integrate rapidly among the Imperial Knights of the Round Table. 67 68

As an Imperial Knight, Artoria served as Arthur's personal guard. She fought in the conquest of Hispania, defeating Roman champions in single combat and personally slaying a Giant and a Sea Demon. 70
